BIOGRAPHY

Avery Franklin Brooks was born on April 18, 1949 and raised in Evansville, Indiania.
His Father was a Union Official and his mother was a musician and Chorale Conductor.
He attended Oberlin College, Indiania University.
Brooks received his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Acting and Directing and was the first African American to graduate in that field.
Avery has been a tenured Professor of Theater at the Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts for the past 15 years.
He plays a variety of woodwind instruments and the Piano.
He and his wife have a daughter Ayana and two sons Asante and Cabral.
He has appeared in "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" on and off Broadway.
He has played Othello at the Folger Theater in Washington D.C.
He has performed the role of Malcolm X in Anthony Davis' Opera "X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X".
During the past 15 years he has repeatedly played Paul Robeson in Phillip Hayes Dean's Play "Paul Robeson" on Broadway and all over the country.
He portrayed Uncle Tom in Showtime's production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for which he received a cable Ace Nomination.
He is the Artistic Director of the National Black Arts Festival.
Inducted into the College of Fellows of American Theater in April 1994.
He was given an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from Oberlin College in May 1996
He has received a NAACP Image Award.
He was awarded the Lifelong Commitment to Arts and Education Award from Young Audiences of D.C.
He was the host of the Documentaries "Marian Anderson" and "Musicial Legacy of Roland Hayes"
He narrated the IMAX film Africa's Elephant Kingdom now showing at IMAX Theaters.
