Hi, my name is Jessie. I can’t tell you my name, or where I live.
It would be too dangerous. The Yeerks are everywhere, and if
they knew how to find me and my friends , we wouldn’t stand a
chance. It all started out when I found these new books called
Animorphs. The characters were: Rachel, Cassie, Jake, Marco,
Tobias, and Ax .
Rachel is tall, blonde, and looks like a model . But she acts like
Xena: Warrior Princess. She loves shopping . In fact , she knows
every inch of the mall like the back of her hand.
Cassie is sort of the opposite . She’s short ,black ,and most of the
time she wears overalls . She also hates shopping. To her,
shopping is something you do when you absolutely need to.
Jake is tall for his age . He has an older brother named Tom who
is a Controller(I’ll get to that part later). Jake is the kind of person
who you can always count on to make tough decisions, even for
people he cares for, like Cassie.
Marco is short and has long brown hair. He lives in an apartment
with his dad. Everyone thinks Marco’s mom is dead, but she’s
really Visser One.
Tobias is a boy stuck in a red-tailed Hawk morph. And Ax is an
Andalite.
The Animorphs got their powers from a dying Andalite. We got
our powers differently. We, as in me and Theresa. I’m 11 years
old and I want to be a singer when I grow up. I have brown hair
and blue eyes. Theresa is my best friend. She’s shorter than me
and is 10 years old.
We can both morph. The way we got our powers is by a wish. I
know it sounds corny, but it’s true. But I’m not the only one who
narrates this story. See what Theresa has to say.
Chapter 2
Hi, I’m Theresa and I’m ten years old. You know how Jessie
explained the real Animorphs’ personalities. Well, I think I’m like
Jake, Marco, Rachel, and Cassie put together. Jessie and I got
our powers, (our morphing powers), the same way. We got our
powers by making a wish. Ya, ya, we know it’s corny. Well,
here’s the story.
We were making a wish at a wishing pond. I had to fork the
change out of my pocket. We both wished that we could morph,
just like the Animorphs. When the coin hit the bottom, it
shriveled up, and then it poofed out into the bright blue box that
the Animorphs got their powers from! Jessie and I reached out to
the bottom of the pond to touch the box. We felt a jolt of
something! The box disappeared and we fell in, (don’t laugh). I
love telling about that, (I mean the wish).
Now let me tell you about the Controllers. Controllers are the bad
guys (and girls). They have Yeerks in their heads. Actually , the
Yeerks are the bad guys, not the Controllers. The Yeerks control
you when they crawl inside your head. Yeerks look like snails
without shells, that are about the size of rats. There are Taxxon
and Hork-Bajir Controllers. Taxxons volunteered to be infested
with Yeerks. They look like giant centipedes with red, Jell-O
eyes. Hork-Bajirs used to be peaceful creatures, until the Yeerks
conquered them. I can’t really describe how they look. All I can
say about them is that they have blades on their knees, elbows,
and other places. Yeerks can take over humans, too.
Chapter 3
Sara was over at my house working on a project with me.
Normally I don’t volunteer to do projects with people who I
know are Controllers , but the teacher had assigned partners this
time and since Sara and I had never worked on a project together
this year she assigned me to be her partner .
So, anyway, Sara was over at my house working on a project
with me when the phone rang. It was 7:00 and my mom was at
rehearsal and my dad was out golfing so we were home alone. I
was about to go answer the phone when Sara jumped up, yelling
"I’ll get it!" I rushed to beat her to the phone, but it was too late.
"Hello, O’Brien residence," she said. Then she put her hand over
the mouthpiece. "It’s for you," she said dryly. "Hi," I said.
"Are you crazy?" Theresa yelled. "Since when is Sara your
personal secretary?"
"Hey, at least that wasn’t my real last name," I said.
"Ssh, don’t talk so loud. She could be listening," Theresa hissed.
Click.
"Did you hear something?" I asked.
"No," Theresa answered. "Probably just your imagination," she
added.
"So why are you calling?" I asked.
"You said you’d call me tonight after you ate supper, and it is
now 7:30."
I looked at my watch. 7:31. Great, just great. I had forgotten to
call her. The reason I was going to call her in the first place is
that we were going to set up a date to go shopping, but I had
forgotten. "There’s someone listening in on the phone, so I gotta
go," I said. We both said Bye and hung up but I still had the
feeling someone had been listening in. Someone like Sara.
Chapter 4
I just called Jessie. She forgot about going shopping, like always.
I thought Sarah had been listening in on our phone conversation.
Jessie thought I was wrong, but I swear that I heard someone,
other than Jessie, breathing. What did Sarah want to know about
us shopping? Well, the real question should be: What did Sarah’s
Yeerk want to know about us shopping? Maybe someday I
would use a fly morph that I have an spy on Sarah. I wanted to
tell Jessie that I found out that Janice was a Controller, but Sarah
was listening.
Speaking of morphs, I fished my unitard out of my drawer, put it
on, and concentrated on my cat morph. I just had to find out
how it would feel to be a cat. I had locked the door of my room
so my sister couldn’t see me. I felt fur grow on me, a tail sprout
out from my spine, and I started to shrink. I had already figured
out how to control my morph. It was cool!
The morphs that I already have are a cockroach, (I accidentally
touched it), a fly, a cat, (my cat), two gerbils, a goat, a frog, a
boa constrictor, and a meerkat. So, my most powerful morph
was a boa constrictor. I wouldn’t want to morph the boa in my
room. If my sister got in, she’d freak out. I have morphed into a
fly and bugged the heck out of Jessie. When I was in the middle
of morphing back from a cat, Jessie called.
Chapter 5
I had just gotten off the phone with Theresa when "Flush." I
didn’t know what it was so I ran into the living room.
"Where’s my pencil?" I asked.
"Hee, hee, hee," Sara giggled.
Great. She had flushed my pencil down the toilet and I didn’t
have any pencils in my house other than that one. Which was
probably somewhere inside my toilet right now.
"Great, now we have to go out and buy another pencil," I said.
"I know a place in the mall that sells pencils for 5 cents," Sara
said.
"No way," I said. Like I was going to go to the Mall with a
Controller. But I didn’t have a choice. It was already 7:50 and
my mom would be home at 9:00 and so would my dad. I looked
at my watch. 8:00. "Oh, all right," I sighed. "I’ll get my coat."
I went into my room. The cordless phone was still sitting on my
bed. I picked it up and dialed Theresa’s number.
"Ring."
"Hello," Theresa said. I didn’t want to be on the phone for long.
"Theresa, meet me at the mall in 10 minutes," I said as fast as I
could.
"Click."
"Why?" Theresa asked.
"Just do it," I said.
Then I hung up. I went to the closet and got my coat. I put it on
and went into the living room just as Sara came out of the
kitchen. Why was she in the kitchen? Was she listening in on my
phone calls? Was she suspicious? Was she calling someone? If
so, who? All my questions were answered in two words: Yes &
Janice.
Chapter 6
Sarah was listening again when Jessie called. Jessie asked me to
meet her at the mall. She didn’t tell me why. I just hoped Sarah
didn’t have anything to do with it.
About a minute after I hung up, Janice called me. Guess what!
She asked me to go to the mall with her. I didn’t want to walk to
the mall in the dark of night with a Controller. Well, I still didn’t
want to walk outside in the dark of night, period – and especially
not with a Controller. Well, I still went with her. She only once
tried to trip me when we walked by an open manhole.
When we got to the mall, Janice wanted to walk around, but I got
her to let me stay by the doors. She went and talked to someone
at the Rave store. It sounded like some business talk or
something like a reservation. A reservation? I hoped not to the
Yeerk pool! When Janice came back, I asked her what she was
doing. She told me that she was asking the clerk if some new
clothes were in stock.
Well, the Janice I knew would just look through the store to find
clothes. So, I knew she had lied to me. I didn’t let Janice browse
around anymore and asked her to stay by me to wait for Jessie.
My excuse was that I was afraid to be by myself in a mall at 8:00
PM. She actually bought it, but she did complain about having to
stand there, twice, in the 30 seconds that we were waiting for
Jessie.
Chapter 7
Me and Sara got on our bikes and started riding. The closest mall
was South County. Me and Theresa didn’t know where the
entrance to the Yeerk pool was yet. But we thought it was in the
Gap and South County didn’t have a Gap. When we got there
Theresa and Janice were waiting at the door.
"Hey, why is Janice here?" I asked.
"Hey, why is Theresa here?" Sara said.
Of course, we both knew the answer. At the same time we both
said, "I invited her." Then, "You invited her?" and finally, "Come
on, let’s go."
Was Janice a Controller? I didn’t know she was.
We went in and as we passed Rave Sara cried," Ooh, look at that
dress. I’m going to go try it on. Be right back," Sara exclaimed
and that’s when the trouble started. We all went in the dressing
room together.
"Close your eyes," Sara said. "I don’t want you seeing me
naked."
So we closed our eyes. Big mistake! I heard something like a
door opening. I opened my eyes just as .... "Ahhhhh!" I
screamed. Sara and Janice pushed us through a door. At first I
didn’t know what had happened. Then I knew. It was an
entrance to the Yeerk pool.
"Run," I yelled. "If I’m right, there should be a dropshaft --over
there. We can use it to escape," I yelled as we ran. There it was,
the dropshaft, straight ahead.
"Block the dropshaft," Sara yelled. "Don’t let them escape!"
Chapter 8
While we were running, Kristen tried to grab us. Kristen? Was
she a Controller too? Well, since she was at the Yeerk Pool, I
guess she was a Controller. We kept on running.
I looked back to see Kristen giving Janice some sort of directions.
When I turned back around, Erica was in my face, and tried to
trip me. Charlie tried to trip Jessie. This place sure smelled bad.
Well, it was filled with slugs. A Hork-Bajir got me with its blade!
"Aaaah!!"
I had to stand it, even though it was bad. I’d morph when we got
to safety. Did I tell you, when you morph and morph back,
you’re as good as new, not even a scratch. I wanted to close my
eyes. I didn’t want to find out that any other people I knew were
Controllers. I was also crying because the cut hurt so much. I
was thinking over how I got myself into this mess. I was thinking
so hard, I wasn’t paying any attention to where I was going. I
would’ve run into a Taxxon and have been its dinner if Jessie
didn’t pull me out of the way. She told me to pay attention if I
wanted to live. I finally gave up, and I morphed into a fly, and
back.
Chapter 9
I looked behind me. They were still following us, but they
weren’t gaining on us anymore. We stopped and looked behind
us, and when we turned around again, they were in front of us.
They had taken a shortcut. Sara grabbed me and Janice grabbed
Theresa. We fought to get free, but we couldn’t. The only way
out was to morph.
I concentrated on the change. I began to shrink. As I shrank, I
began to grow fur -- black fur. My fingers grew shorter and
turned into paws. I could hear my bones crackling as my
backbone stretched out to form a tail. My ears slid up the side of
my head and grew pointed. I had become a cat. Theresa’s cat, to
be exact.
I extended my claws, hissed, and scratched Sara’s arm. "Ow!"
she cried, and she dropped me. I landed on my feet and started
to run away, but then I remembered that I had to go back and
help Theresa. As I ran back, I started to morph back. Morphing
doesn’t really hurt, but it does feel and sound strange.
Sara just froze. She hadn’t noticed me morph into a cat, so she
didn’t know that I could morph. When I had finished the change
back to human, Sara snapped out of her trance. Janice hadn’t
noticed me morph either, but she also hadn’t seen me morph
back. I ran up just as Theresa broke free.
We started running, but what we didn’t know was that we were
running straight into a trap. Where were we anyway? We were in
some sort of forest or woods, but where? There was a parked
Bug fighter up ahead. We ran in.
Ooooooh!!! Sounds pretty kewl so far!!! Wanna go back to the Journal To read some more stories??? How 'bout back to the main page???
