June 26, 1999. VIEW ONE: Every band has
to have a "remember that time we got shut down by the cops" story...this
show was ours. Pretty cool night otherwise. it makes me sad to think that
the place it happened, the Down Below Lounge, is no longer in existence.
Crazy...a wall of old televisions, security cams all over the place, all
sorts of strange devices...anyway, Quisling was up first. a fun bunch of
guys...our friend Pat on drums. Kick ass cover of "Any way you want it"!
Then the cops showed up, gave a noise ticket, and went away. Then Katzenmallets
played a crazy, disjointed set. Also highly recommended. AKE played 3rd,
and made it about 6 songs into the set when the cops showed up again and
shut the place down. Some of us ended up swimming in Lake Mendota w/ the
locals, afterwards.?
Madison seems to like us. and we really like Madison.? Another highlight: touring the Madison Museum of Bathroom Tissue. -- DAN VIEW TWO: It was ridiculously hot and I was ridiculously drunk. I also smoked a full pack of cigarettes and I'm not even a full-time smoker. Katzenmallets and Quisling both rocked L.A.M.F. The Down Below Lounge had a dirty, lived-in-by-rats look to it. Lots of old paper plates with uneaten chunks of pizza on them. During our performance I just remember rolling around in a big sweatball, screaming my head-off, and fucking up all of my guitar parts. Still, the response was actually quite enthusiastic. When the cops came, it was almost a relief. I felt like I was in an oven. I was exhausted and dehydrated. A pretty good introduction of our virus into the hippy-strewn campus area of Mad Town. -- KEITH |
