Reason for Living

Why are we here? In one word: relationships. I believe we are here to build and foster relationships. Relationships with all those around us, friends, enemies, loved ones, family members, everyone. But we must not forget to build a relationship with ourselves. That is possibly one of the most important yet most forgotten. How do we feel about ourselves? I feel we need to make sure to spend quality time with ourselves, time away from everyone when we can sit and reflect on who we really are and ask if we like that person. But beyond ourselves and the people around us, we must not forget to create relationships with the animals in our lives, and I do not mean just our pets. What about the birds in the sky? Or that squirrel living in the tree in your yard? For those of us spending time outdoors, what about the animals we track or spot during our trips? Even beyond the animals, how many of us work on our relationship with Gaia (the earth) herself? For me, each time I take a trip outdoors I make sure to spend time with myself as well as openly working on my relationships with the animals I see and the earth I enjoy. All of this helps me to work on the relationship I have with that beyond the physical. The spiritual nature of life comes to us with many labels and from many traditions, but they all focus on creating an open and positive relationship with that energy. For me, I work on that relationship each day as I work on the other relationships I have within my life.
