So, you keep seeing the WoD abreviation all over the place and you want to know what it means. White Wolf's World of Darkness (WoD) is a setting for a number of role-playing games. The simple setting is placed in modern times; however, the world has a more gothic feel to it. No longer do humans populate the top of the food chain, nor do they walk the earth alone in their intelligence. Walking among them are vampires, werecreatures, faeries, wraiths, mages, and a number of other supernatural beings.
Within the cities, the vampires, or Kindred as they call themselves, play out their political power struggles. Each trying to grab control of the city or some small portion of it. Each night brings the hunger, and how the feed it depends on who they might find. Some struggle to maintain their humainty while others embrace the beast within. Carefully they walk among humans, maintaining the Masquerade so as not to incite another hunt. Away from the eyes of humans, the Prince of the city meets with the Primogen council to discuss Kindred law, and decide upon which clan shall control what.
Outside of the cities the werecreatures rule. By simple numbers the Garou (werewolves) stand as Gaia's protectors. Past mistakes lead the Garou into a war with the other shapeshifters, the War of Rage. This war almost wiped out all the other races before the Garou came to their senses; however, the distrust and hatred for the Garou has not yet healed. The Garou see themselves as the only chance that Gaia has in surviving the evil destruction and corruption of the Wyrm, and their numbers are dwindling. To complicate their fight, the advancement of human civilization has strengthened the Weaver while weakening the Wyld. Some of their kind has seen this as a second war that must also be fought. While others have embraced the Weaver and added technology to their arsenal against the Wyrm.
