Amidala's Journal
Take a peek inside the mind of one of the most fascinating characters in the new Star Wars movie, the elegant Queen Amidala. This Journal is listed as a children's book, but I imagine most adult Star Wars fans will enjoy it just as much as the kids - it's quite well written and really illuminates Amidala's personality. If you were at all confused by the Amidala/Padme switcheroos in the movie, you'll really enjoy reading the specifics, in Amidala's own words, of how the swap was carried out - when it's Amidala in the fancy dresses, and when it's Padme. You'll also see the other characters of The Phantom Menace through Amidala's eyes: her caring for Anakin, her frustration with the Jedi, and the lessons learned from her friendship with Jar Jar. If you liked the Queen, you'll love her Journal!
Anakin's Journal
The Star Wars Journals series continues with the diary of Anakin Skywalker. While I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as Amidala's Journal (the Queen is, after all, my favorite Ep I character), it's still a definite keeper! Like Amidala's, Anakin's Journal is well written and a great resource for finding out more "behind-the-scenes" information on the characters and events of The Phantom Menace. Anakin's journal tells of his life on Tatooine, his dreams...and the adventures he finds himself caught up in. It was really interesting to see his impressions of all the new friends he made in the movie - one of the first things he says about Obi-Wan Kenobi is "I don't think he likes me." That changes by the end of the journal, though, as sharing in the loss of Qui-Gon Jinn brings Qui-Gon's two apprentices closer together.
