The tagline on the cover of my copy of Dune (the paperback, not the hardcover) reads, "An Unparalleled Achievement of Imagination." I will certainly not argue. I would rate Frank Herbert's masterpiece among the best science fiction novels ever written. Basically, the plot follows Paul Atreides, the acme of a Bene Gesserit breeding program, as he becomes Muad'dib, the savior of the Fremen people of Arrakis. That, however, is the barest description. Encapsulating Dune completely would take far more than a sentence. It explores religion, politics, war, the human spirit, and much more. Furthermore, the messages never become heavyhanded or distracting; this book makes you think. Frank Herbert has created a world surpassing any previous work of science fiction, holding a mirror up to the human race and expanding our horizons while providing a truly satisfying novel.
