The
Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle. Also a 1982
movie, featuring the voices of Jeff Bridges and
Mia Farrow. Music by Jimmy Webb. |
I was
first introduced to The Last Unicorn when a
couple of my college friends invited me over to
watch the video. At first I was put off by the
cartoony animation, but soon the story had me in
its grasp. For a time I couldn't find the book,
but it was worth the wait! |
When
the unicorn Amalthea hears rumors that the rest
of her race has been destroyed by the Red Bull,
she sets out to discover the truth. She is joined
by Schmendrick the Magician, who is searching for
the magic he cannot control. Soon they are joined
by Molly Grue, who becomes their conscience and
common sense. The three travel to the realm of
King Haggard and his Red Bull, where they are
sure to find what they seek. But when Prince Lir
falls in love with the now-human Amalthea, and
events begin to unravel, they realize that what
they search for is perhaps not what they really
want...but they cannot stop the search, for the
happy ending cannot come in the middle of the
story. |
The
Last Unicorn provides fun and excitement for
kids and thought-provoking themes for adults. It
is a well-rounded masterpiece of imagination. |
