2001: A Space Odyssey, starring Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. Directed by Stanley Kubrick. Later a book by Arthur C. Clarke. Music by various "classical" composers, most notably Richard Strauss with "Also Sprach Zarathustra," the 2001 Theme.
The definitive movie of the New Millennium, 2001 presents the past and future in a new light. It subtly plays off of a popular sci-fi idea: that aliens have contributed to the development of the human race.
Four great periods in human history are explored in this film, each with its own giant monolith. A group of apes inventing the first tool/weapon, in the shadow of a giant monolith....A group of scientists exploring the moon, finding a giant monolith....And the most popular scene, the astronaut Dave Bowman and the computer HAL. When HAL murders Bowman's partner, the lone human finds himself in a life or death struggle with a computer. "What are you doing, Dave?" The scene ends in a spectacular vision of Jupiter and Dave's spaceship...and a giant monolith.
2001: A Space Odyssey is a journey through space, time, and the human mind. And who can live through the year 2001 without seeing the movie?
