2001: A
Space Odyssey, starring Keir Dullea and Gary
Lockwood. Directed by Stanley Kubrick. Later a
book by Arthur C. Clarke. Music by various
"classical" composers, most notably
Richard Strauss with "Also Sprach
Zarathustra," the 2001 Theme. |
The
definitive movie of the New Millennium, 2001
presents the past and future in a new light. It
subtly plays off of a popular sci-fi idea: that
aliens have contributed to the development of the
human race. |
Four
great periods in human history are explored in
this film, each with its own giant monolith. A
group of apes inventing the first tool/weapon, in
the shadow of a giant monolith....A group of
scientists exploring the moon, finding a giant
monolith....And the most popular scene, the
astronaut Dave Bowman and the computer HAL. When
HAL murders Bowman's partner, the lone human
finds himself in a life or death struggle with a
computer. "What are you doing, Dave?"
The scene ends in a spectacular vision of Jupiter
and Dave's spaceship...and a giant monolith. |
2001: A
Space Odyssey is a journey through space, time,
and the human mind. And who can live through the
year 2001 without seeing the movie? |
