1. What is Iria: Zeiram the Animation?
Iria: Zeiram the Animation is a 6-episode OAV (Original Animated Video) series that tells the events that happened before the two live-action movies Zeram & Zeram 2.
2. When was Iria: Zeiram the Animation released?
The original Japanese version was released in 1994 by Bandai. Central Park Media released it into the U.S. in 1996.
3. Who created Iria: Zeiram the Animation?
Keita Amemiya, the same person responsible for directing the Zeram movies.
4. What is the Administration?
The Administration is the form of government within Iria: Zeiram. They are in charge of all major concerns, such as an invasion by Zeiram. It’s hinted in the sixth episode that every planet has it’s own Administration, sort of like the ancient Greek city-states.
5. What is Ghomvak Security and Investigations?
Ghomvak Security is a division of the Administration. It handles all of the less conventional methods of enforcing the law, including bounty hunters. Bob was a member of this group and apparently very respected before his ‘death’.
6. Who are the Authorities?
The Authorities are the peacekeeping force within the Administration, basically another term for the police.
7. What is the Tedan Tippedai Corporation?
The Tedan Tippedai Corporation is a huge company that has based its headquarters on the Administration homeworld of Myce. It was the company that devised the plan to use Zeiram as a weapon.
8. What is the deal with the hairbeads that everybody wears?
It’s never really explained what the purpose of the hairbeads was, most likely they are the current fashion within the Administration. Most people who wear the beads are prosperous, examples include Gren, Puttubayh, Dr. Touka, and basically everybody on Myce’s ruling council. Another interesting note is that they seem to be meant for men and not women, Fujikuro even says something to that effect in the beginning intro.
However, Iria and Kei ignore this unwritten rule and haven’t gotten any comments about it from anyone besides Fujikuro so it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. More than likely, Fujikuro is just old-fashioned.
9. Who created Iria’s look?
There are actually three people responsible for Iria’s unique look. The first is Keita Amemiya, the person that first dreamed up the concept and made the Zeram movies. The second is Masakazu Katsura, this was the person who drew the initial sketches for every character. Last, but not least, is Ryunosuke Otonashi who finalized all the looks for the finished animation.
10. What’s the difference between freezing and shields?
There actually is no difference, at least in bounty hunter lingo, when someone is ‘frozen’ they’re simply incapacitated. The shields trap their target until more permanent measures can be implemented.
11. How old is Iria?
Well, the series doesn't actually make any clear reference to that, other than the fact that Iria's next birthday will place her in the proper age to receive a hunter's license. For this, you could substitute in a real-life, everyday example, such as legal-age (18 yrs.). But, since this is a hunting license we're talking about, it seems more reasonable to place the age requirement higher than just 18 years old. So, Iria's probably 20 yrs old, or older.
12. Is Bob Iria's partner or her boss?
This question can get a little confusing. In the episodes prior to Gren's death, we see Bob basically ordering Gren and Iria around. Still, he's in more of a leadership position (a boss). However, when Iria goes to rescue Dr. Touka, she introduces Kei & Komimasa to Bob, saying he's her partner. This is how we figure it: Bob was Iria and Gren's boss at the beginning of the series. Then, after Gren's death, Bob, being the kind soul that he is, took it upon himself to become Iria's partner.
13. In episode 5, how did Fujikuro know that Zeiram was really Gren?
There's actually a logical reason for this. If you watch closely, after Fujikuro says, "So it was Zeiram who stole Gren's borobdin. I'd know it anywhere," you'll see Zeiram's hand go up to his "hat" for a brief moment. What he's doing is the bead-flick that was habitual to Gren. That's how Fujikuro knew it was actually Gren inside Zeiram.
14. In the final episode, does Fujikuro survive the zeiramoid attack?
It is never shown if Fujikuro survives the attack or not, however if you take his last scene in context then it becomes pretty obvious that he lives. Any scene that has Fujikuro promising to get more money out of Iria is meant to be humorous, not tragic. Besides, Fujikuro isn't the sort of person who would allow a measly horde of zeiramoids to stand between him and a profit.
15. Does Iria have a last name?
There isn't a straight answer to this question as nobody in the OVA seemed to have a last name. So, the short answer is no. However, if someone was really desperate to give Iria a last name you could call her Iria Hisakawa. Hisakawa being the family name of Hisakawa Aya, the voice actress who played Iria in the original Japanese version.
