Gandalf - The name, most often used above others, given to the Istar by the men of the north, meaning "elf of the magic staff." Gandalf is also known as Olorin (in Valinor), Mithrandir (by the Elves and Dunedain), Tharkun (by the Dwarves), Incanus (in the South), Greyhame (by the Rohirrim), Stormcrow, the Grey Messenger, Laithspell, the Grey Pilgrim, the White Rider, and Greymantle. He is most often called Gandalf the Grey, or Mithrandir in southern and elven lands. See the above names for more information.
One of the five Istari sent to Middle-Earth by the Valar to combat Sauron. Of all, it is said that only Gandalf achieved this. Upon his arrival in the Grey Havens, Cirdan, seeing in him great wisdom and strength, gave Gandalf Narya, the Red Ring of Fire, for he knew the wizard would use its power well and return this way again.
For many years Gandalf went among the peoples of Middle-earth in the guise of an old man, garbed in gray, who leaned upon a staff. It is because of this, and the fact that he often spent time amongst the elves, that he recieved the names of Gandalf and Mithrandir. Though often in awe of his power, and sometimes distrustful of him, the free peoples listened to his Council and he gathered many loyal friends and allies against the darkness.
When Sauron's power grew again, Gandalf urged the White Council, of which he was a member, to attack Dol Guldur, and there found Thrain, the dying dwarf king of Durin's Line. He was entrusted with map of Erebor and a key. This event later made possible the forming of Thorin's Company and the liberation of Erebor. On this journey Bilbo found the One Ring, and Gandalf began researching its history.
He was leader of the Fellowship, until his battle with the Balrog in Moria. He cast down Durin's Bane, but he himself was slain in body. In return for his long labors and loyalty, he was reincarnated as Gandalf the White, and given far greater powers. In Fangorn he helped persuade the Ents it was time for action, then cured Theoden of his sickness. Gandalf won the Battle of the Hornburg by gathering Erkenbrand and his men and summoning the Huorns. At Isengard, he proved himself the more powerful of the two, when he broke Saruman's staff, casting him from the Order and the Council.
Throughout the War of the Ring, Gandalf countered Sauron again and again, until at last the Ring was cast into the fire and Sauron destroyed. After this he passed over the western seas (for he was the bearer of Narya) along with Frodo, Elrond, Cirdan, and Galadriel.

Saruman - The leader of the five Istari, known also as Curunir (man of skill) by the men of Middle Earth, and Curumo, in Valinor. He was the White Messenger and upon the arrival of the wizards he was considered to be the most powerful of the five, and became leader of the White Council. Always was Saruman proud, and he grew jealous of Gandalf's influence and knowledge, and in the end became corrupted by the lure of power and turned to evil.
Saruman was a Maiar of Aule, and sought ever for information about the One Ring, lost ages ago. He was granted the keys of Orthanc, thereby gaining not only the stronghold of Isengard, but one of the palantiri as well. He discovered its properties, but this led to him being ensnared by Sauron. Though Saruman was the Dark Lord's servant, he was an unwilling one, and ever he plotted against his "ally" and sought to wrest knowledge of the ring from Gandalf without his knowing.
In the end, Saruman not only betrayed Gandalf and the Council, but his dark master as well. He gathered a great army and invaded Rohan, but his power was shattered at the Battle of Helm's Deep. In Orthanc, he tryed to escape tbe wrath of the Ents and the Rohirrim by asking Gandalf to join him. But Gandalf's will was greater, and he had the greater power as well. The staff of Saruman was broken, and with it, his power. He fled to the Shire, which was ocupied by his henchman, and there wrought much evil, until the retaking of the land by Frodo. He was cut down by one of his own servants, Grima Wormtongue, who slit his throat.
