Ship Tactics for Ships Operating Within a Fleet
F5W War Destroyer
cost:102 +Drn
Role:Fleet Firepower Support
Excellent ship design! Incorporates the best features of the F5 Frigate and the E5 Escort. Power flow is outstanding which allows the ship to do lots without strain. The disrupters are of the wide-arc, range 22 variety. Besides allowing for the wider arc by moving the disrupters from the wing to the warp pods, this also has freed up two prime weapons locations. On this ship a P-III occupies each of these locations, this is okay since they don't drain a lot of power, can be used defensively and can take the first two phaser hits thereby protecting the P-I's. The drone suite has gone from 1B to 2B and on the other side of the shuttle bay the shuttles have gone from 1 to 2. In reality it is a virtual light cruiser. It has the energy costs and turn mode of a frigate, and most of the firepower of a cruiser (An F5W can bring 5 P-I's, 2 P-III's and 2 disruptors to bear on a single target and it has the drone suite of a cruiser (2B racks and 1 ADD), a D5 can bring 4P-I's, 2 P-III's and 4 disruptors to bear on a single target (it may not be able to overload all 4 of the disruptors)), however it lacks the staying power and repair capabilities of a cruiser (61 vs. 77 internals and a 2 vs. a 4 Dam Con rating). Because of this ship's excellent setup and lack of internal fortitude, This ship should not be sent into the heart of battle. With the capabilities that it has it should not just be limited to its primary role of fleet fire support. An F5 would suffice for that. This ship can move up to take the place of a support cruiser if need be. To fully utilize an F5W's capabilities, an admiral needs to look for opportunities for the ship to move up into an advanced wing position and/or send it (with other ships of course) on a flanking manuever.

This ship is 99% similar to the F5W. The main difference is that the wing phasers are P-I's instead of P-III's. This improves the offensive capabilities but draws more power. See the extensive F5W description for details on use.

A powerhouse of a destroyer! The drone suite is that of a cruiser and so is its direct firepower, which makes this another virtual cruiser. The main drawback to this ship is the shock potential of the disruptors. The ship can truly mimic a heavy cruiser by bringing 5 P-I's and 4 disruptors to bear on a target (D5W 6 P-I's, 2 P-III's and 4 disruptors) but this can be a risky proposition and should only be used when necessary. I would recommend cycling the disruptors in pairs, firing 2 at a time, 16 impulses apart. With this ship you have cruiser shields (#1-30) and a reasonable amount of internals (67), but an admiral needs to watch that this ship is not overly placed at the forefront or it will burnt out by the enemy. This ship sho uld be ready to take up a front line cruiser's position to help hold the formation if needed. If used in a size class 4 fleet or an expeditionary/flanking force from the main battle fleet, an F6 should place itself at the forefront to bear the blows for the smaller ships.
