YOUR FAVOURITE CARTOON
I always wanted to know what people's favourite cartoons were that they watched, and if there was a shining example of cartoon goodness that most people stopped there life for half an hour. This survey lasted around 6 weeks in total, and got a reasonable response. The responses varied quite a lot, and the location of those answers followed suit. Here are the results --
Batman Animated | 8 votes |
Spiderman | 5 votes |
Superman | 3 votes |
Simpsons | 2 votes |
South Park | 2 votes |
Garfield | 2 votes |
The Tick | 2 votes |
Other | 12 votes |
Other votes included - Bugs Bunny, X-Men, Charlie Brown, Rugrats, Transformers, Animaniacs, Space Ghost (Coast to Coast), Asterisk, She-Ra, Snoopy, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Retro Award Winner!
Batman Animated -- the Winner.
Yes, this is the cartoon I voted for, so I was stoked with the results, and...no I did not swing the results my way :) I didn't have the chance to catch all the episodes - work and university love to kill good quality cartoon time - but if I was around I would drop everything to watch the Dark Knight Detective.
Batman is a cool character, but one that does have a lot of adult concepts entertwined into his history and background. It is hard to translate Batman into something a child can watch while he gobbles his breakfast before school, or has them waking early on a Saturday morning. Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett and Paul Dini made it look easy. These guys are gods, of the animation kind at least. This cartoon appeals to children with its high action and basic animation. But, its greatest feat, is that it appeals to all ages. The grim look of Gotham - a perfect translation, Batman's gritty demeanor and his awesome rogue gallery; this appeals to an older audience but also does not confuse younger audiences along the way.
Batman has spawned two feature animated films - The Mask of the Phantasm and Sub Zero - and given a style of animation that brought Superman onto the morning television, a future Batman cartoon, three series of comics about the cartoon (drawn and written in the animated style) and even a comic, Adventures in the DC Universe, that gave us stories about all our favourite DC heroes written and drawn in the impressive style. Batman Animated can also be said to have started the new push for comic characters to be translated into animated shows - Marvel followed suit quite quickly with their X-Men cartoon, and have brought a lot of their characters into the animated fray.
If you haven't seen this cartoon, go and hire Mask of the Phantasm (thankyous go to DangrGirl *mwa* for buying it for me) and sit and enjoy. This cartoon is incredible, and one can not be beaten for quality, entertainment and nearly the best characterisation of characters that I have seen in any medium.
But.....I must add an award for THE MOST RETRO VOTE......
SUPER FRIENDS -- "I loved the array of characters they portrayed on the show" This was what one respondent answered for the survey. I used to love this cartoon. This cartoon used to make me wake up early on Saturday mornings to watch it. This cartoon was on television from 1973 - 1986 (am I that old?), and basically told stories about the Justice League of America. We saw Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Robin and Aquaman among others and this was the staple cartoon for any comic fan. Cheesey storylines, and The Wonder Twins, not much could beat Super Friends on a Saturday morning.
