Things you thought you knew

General

The three primary colors are Red, Yellow and Blue.
The three primary colors are Cyan (Blue), Magenta (Red) and Green. Red, Yellow, and Blue are the three primary pigments.

Sunblock is especially important on those really hot days.
Whether or not you get a sunburn or suntan has absolutely nothing to do with the temperature outside. What matters is the amount of ultraviolet radiation that hits your skin. The two things that most control this are the sky clarity and the elevation of the sun. Though light clouds make little difference the most radiation comes on clear summer (around June 22 in the northern hemisphere) days around noon because this is when the sun is at it's highest.

Vikings wore horns on their helmets to intimidate their enemies.
Vikings did not traditionally wear horns on their head. The idea comes from old drawings of one of their gods who had horns on his head. The myth was carried on mostly through Wagner’s Ring operas.

Globes are innacurate because they don't show the bumps and cuts of mountains and vallys.
Mt. Everest and the Marianna's Trench are only plus or minus seven miles or so. The Earth is 8,000 miles in daimeter. To compare...if you shrunk the Earth to the size of a cueball, it would be smoother than said cueball.

The Second Amendment protects my right as a citizen to own and carry a gun.
In the 1939 case U.S. vs. Miller, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted as guaranteeing the States right to maintain and train a militia. It has subsequently refused to hear any other such case. Since it is the constitution itself that declares the Supreme Court to be the body which shall interpret itself, then it must be admited that although it doesn't disallow a right to do so, the Constitution does NOT guarantee a citizen a right to bear arms.

P.T. Barnum made lots of money as a con artist, proving his famous quotation: "There's a sucker born every minute!"
The line is actually attributable to a competitor of his. (The story of this quotation is VERY entertaining and deals with Giants, Ancient Fossils, and, of course, trickery and deceit. Look it up if you get the chance.)

Space Flight

Astronauts float around in the Space Shuttle because there is no gravity in space.
There is quite a bit a gravity in space. Though the gravity is a bit less because they are 200 or so miles from the surface, the reason they float around is because gravity is exactly counteracted by centrifugal force when somthing is in orbit.

Space Hero John Glenn was the first astronaut in space.
Anyone who knows anything knows that Alan Shepard was there first even though he didn't fly a complete orbit.
...but some people realize that the Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin beat both astronauts there, orbit and all!

YET...

almost no one knows that even Yuri was beaten by another unnamed cosmonaut who was in such bad shape after his "landing" that the Russians did it all over again just to improve the PR.

Astronomy

Mercury is the hottest planet since it’s the closest to the sun.
Though it is the closest planet, Mercury’s lack of atmosphere keeps it from holding what heat it does receive. The planet Venus, however, has an extensive Carbon Dioxide atmosphere which causes a greenhouse effect pushing temperatures to over 800 Deg. F.

The North Star is the brightest star in the sky.
The brightest star as seen from the Earth (after the sun) is Sirius, the Dog Star. The North Star (Polaris) is not even in the top ten.

History

Columbus was the first European to reach the Americas.
Viking colonists settled in Vinland (Newfoundland) hundreds of years earlier.

Charles Lindburgh was the first person to fly over the atlantic.
About 70 people had done so previously. He was the first to fly it solo.

The atomic bombs were the most horrific attacks ever carried out in war.
The firebombings of Tokyo and Dresden each killed many more people than both bombs combined, though neither of these approached the militarily useless Holocaust, Rape of Nanking, and Stalins deadly rise to power.

Not only was Cleopatra Egyptian, but she was also black.
Not only was Cleopatra NOT black, she was NOT even of Egyptian descent. She (and her ruling familiy, the Ptolomies) was Greek. (This myth has even been perpetuated by the likes of "Trivial Pursuit" and "Jeopardy"!)

Zoology

Tarantulas are very deadly spiders.
Though some people can have very serious reactions to a tarantula bite (much as with a bee sting), the instances of death are extremely rare.

Pirhana are very deadly fish.
There has never (read: never) been a reliable report of anyone killed in a pirhana attack.

Hyena's are a very deadly type of wild dog.
They are deadly but they aren't dogs. They are more closely related to the mongoose.

It's a waste of time to run from an alligator, they can outrun a human.
It's a waste of time to run from a (insert favorite snake), they can outslither a human.
The fastest reptile is a skink that moves at about 18 mph. Humans can run up to 25 mph.

Cinematic

Humphry Bogart's most famous line is "Play it again, Sam."
Well, it probably is, but he never said it in Casablanca...or any other movie for that matter. 1
