Brett Six presents: SHATTER!
Chapter 1: Introduction

New Orleans, Louisiana

A city full of life and culture. Home to people who have their own way of life. A man walks down the streets alone. Most normal people wouldn't. But Jason Dallas isn't an average man. He walks along, his hair soaked with rain, but that doesn't seem to bother him. There is a small radio attached to his belt. It's quietly playing a lively cajun tune. He hears a sound behind him. He turns quickly and notices two tall men following him, carrying baseball bats. He can hear their faint whispering and he doesn't like being followed. He turns into an alley and they follow him like shadows. He stands under the small light that is positioned on a pole. He looks up they alley wall. *Dead end Jason* he thinks. *Man I was hoping to avoid this.* He speaks to the men who are now drawing near. "Why are y'all following me? Don't ya have nothin' else to do than tail me?"

One of the thugs speaks up, "Look bud just gimme that radio of yours and we won't have no problems."

The other one adds, "Yeah...give us your money too." They move into the light and Jason notices that they are wearing jackets that have F. o. H. labels on them. Jason reaches down and turns up his radio a little louder.

Then Jason says, "Look mes amis y'all are not gettin' anything from me that ya don't have comin'. So jus turn your ugly selves back out on dat street and forget ya ever saw me."

One of the thugs replied as he pulled out a small gun out of his jacket. "Well I'll just have to take what's coming to me huh?"

Jason flashes his trademark smile, "Well if dat's what you want..." Then blue energy surrounded his fists.

One thug said, "This guy's a mutie or somethin'"

Jason then frowned and said, "Mutie I hate being called that!" Then he fired two pulsing bolts of his sound shock energy striking them both full in the chest knocking them to the ground. As they got up, they walked toward him. Jason fired two more small blots at them aimed at their belts, and when the beams hit their pants dropped to their ankles. They looked at each other and ran pants down out of the alley. Jason couldn't resist he sent two more shots at them striking them in the ass.

"Yeeeow!" They howled in uinson and kept going. "And don't let me catch you two around here again!", Jason shouted, trying not to laugh. Those two were small time hoods at best, but one thing about them bothered him. The F. o. H. logos.

Chapter 2 Michelle and Smiley

He continued on letting that episode slip his mind. He just wanted to go to his favorite night spot. He reached down and shut off his radio. *I don't think I'll need anymore tonight.* He thought to himself.

A few minutes later he was standing outside a coffe shop. A pink neon sign read Michelle's coffeshop. Michelle, Jason's knockout girlfriend, was the owner. Jason was just about the only person who really cared about her. They grew up together and were nearly inseparable. She and his best friend Smiley were the only people in town that knew Jason was a mutant. Michelle had bought the little shop with the money she inherited when her parents died not long ago. Smiley was a skinny tall black man who Jason could always count on in a pinch. His band "Smiley and the Po-Boys" played here often. Jason opened the door and strode in wearing his normal grin. It only got bigger when he noticed Michelle standing near the cash register, waiting to close up. She was a redhead about 5'9", with a dynamite figure. Jason yelled, "Hey chere, what does a guy gotta do to get noticed here?" Michelle then spun around, and smiled when she recognized his voice. She strutted over to him and kissed him on the cheek. "How can I help you hon?", she asked.

"Are you on the menu chere?", he said looking her over.

"If I was don't you think everybody would order me?", she laughed.

"They'd have to fight me first!", Jason remarked. "Just bring me a french-vanilla cappucino..I'll be over in my usual spot.", Jason added.

"Ok sugah, it'll be out in a sec.", she said and walked back into the kitchen. A few minutes later a waitress brought out his coffee.

Jason looked around, then asked "Where's Smiley? Isn't he usually playing until close?"

The waitress said, "Nobody has seen him tonight, we were hoping you could tell us."

Just then Smiley came staggering through the door and collapsed. "I guess now we know!", Jason yelled as he jumped over the table and rushed to Smiley's side. Michelle came running out of the back when she heard the noise.

"Smiley!", she screamed when she saw him lying there coughing up blood.

"Elle call an ambulance!", Jason shouted. Michelle ran back toward the kitchen. Jason then lifted Smiley's head and asked "Are you all right buddy?"

Smiley opened his eyes weakily then said "Oh man am I late?", coughing up blood as he spoke.

"Who did this to you?", Jason asked.

"Two guys...with...F. o. H. labels on their jackets...", Smiley sputtered then passed out cold.

Chapter 3: Questions answered and Questions raised

A few minutes later the ambulance sped to the hospital. Jason helped Michelle close up after everyone went home. "What did they say about Smiley?", Michelle asked.

"Just that he was hurt bad and needed immediate medical attention.", Jason answered. Then Jason asked her, "Michelle have you ever heard of F. o. H.? Smiley said the guys who jumped him were wearing those logos on their jackets." He decided not to tell her about his little run-in with them earlier. She was scared enough.

She replied, "Friends of Humanity, word out on the street is that they are after..." She then laid her head on Jason's chest and began crying. "Jason they're mutant hunters...what if they attack you next?"

Then a thought hit Jason's mind like a lightning bolt. "Elle... Smiley's not a mutant...why would they jump him?"

Michelle them calmed down a little. "Maybe they target other people too. Just to flex their muscles.", she answered.

Jason then said "Well they flexed on the wrong guy...now I'm hunting them!"

"NO", Michelle shouted bursting into tears again..."They'll kill you Jason, those people are terrorits. I read about what they did in New York a few years ago." She hugged him tight. "Please promise me you won't go chasing after them.", she pleaded.

He hugged her back. "But you know that I'm not going to stand back and let this go either.", Jason whispered.

She nodded and said, "Please...let's just go home. I need to relax."

"Ok pretty lady, just cheer up, you're to cute to be lookin sad." She smiled as he wiped her tears away.

Chapter 4: A Shattering Ultimatum

They got into Michelle's car. It was a beautiful blue 1969 Roadrunner that could outrun anything on wheels. He agreed to drive she was wiped out from running the shop all day and the recent bad news. Not long after they started back home she said she laid her head on his shoulder and fell asleep. He took a second to look down at her sleeping body. *She's even more beatiful asleep then when she's mad*, he thought. He then turned on the radio so he could store some energy just in case they needed it when they got home. She stirred a little at first then laid back against his shoulder and stayed half-awake. He put one arm around her and kept the other on the wheel. His favorite way to drive. Just then a news flash came on. Jason recognized it from the annoying theme music.

The newscaster came on. "Greeeting to all you night owls out there. This is Bill Beeper with the 11 o'clock news. In local news local jazz musician, Smiley McSwain, was hospitalized with serious injuries after he was attacked by members of the national terroist group known as Friends of Humanity, normally known as mutant-hunters this group has begun targeting normal humans as well." Jason turned up the radio slightly, then Michelle woke up fully and began listen closely. The newscaster continued his report, "We now go live to Susan Storm with an exclusive at the Mayor's office where he has called an emergency meeting." Talking could be heard in the background and a woman's voice came on. "This is Susan Storm live here at the Mayor's office. Mr. Mayor what can you tell us about the intention of this terroist group?"

The Mayor's assertive voice took over. "Well I received a statement from the head of the Organization known as the Friends of Humanity that reads as follows. People of New Orleans,....if every mutant is not hunted down and exterminated within the next 48 hours we will strike again and burn New Orleans to the ground....Jason slammed on his brakes, nearly losing control of the car. Michelle shut off the radio and Jason pulled off to the side of the road. They looked at each other, their faces said it all.

Chapter 5: Home

They soon after reached their apartment and parked the car. Jason got out and walked over to her side of the car, opened the door and picked her up. She was asleep, emotionally drained. He bumped the door shut with his butt and carried her upstairs. When he reached the apartment he whispered "Hey angel...time to wake up."

"Hmmmmm...", she mumbled and opened her eyes and noticed he was carrying her. She felt so safe in his arms like this. She hated to get down. He set her down gently and unlocked the door.

"Stay close 'elle.", he whispered. He triggered his sound shock power and was ready for anything. She hit the lightswitch and the lights came on slowly. She then shut and locked the door behind them. He searched the apartment quietly when he was finished he powered down and hung up his jacket. He then dropped on the couch. Michelle joined him, kicking off her shoes and leaning against him. Jason wrapped his arms around her kissing her neck gently. "You need to relax chere...", he said. "You had a rough day.", he added.

Michelle then turned around and kissed him. Pressing her soft lips against his. He then pulled her close and ran his fingers through her hair. "You're right...", she sighed. "I'll call Lisa tommorrow and tell her to run things for a few days. She's my second-in-command, she can handle it.", she smiled and looked at Jason. "I'll slip into my pj's and go to bed, you going to join me tiger?"

Jason then kissed her and said, "Yeah, I need to get some sleep. The police can handle it." They strode into the bedroom, Michelle pulled down the blankets on the bed and laid down. Jason was about to join her when he heard a loud knock on the door. A look of horror and worry came to Michelle's face.

"You don't think...?", she whispered.

Jason cut her off by raising his hand. Then he leaned over and whispered to her. "If you hear my sound shock blast go out the window and get to the police." She nodded and he turned on what he had in reserve. The knock came again louder. Jason then opened the door.
