The Incubus, like the Succubus, is a night demon. "Incubus" translates out into "nightmare". They are strictly male, while the Succubi are strictly female. They too copulate with humans in order to steal their sexual fluids (Succubi sleep with men, Incubi sleep with women). The Incubus is said to have a taste for unborn flesh and will sit atop a pregnent female and rip the the fetus from her womb. Basically, these two demons were the answer to the unanswerable (impotency, stillbirth, miscarriage) in a time where science and medicine weren't too advanced. The Incubus was the inspiration for the two paintings by Henri Fuseli, "The Incubus" and "The Nightmare", which in turn became the inspiration for the horror movie "GOTHIC".
