Lilith by Sheryl L. Monks

When poets mark a page they best beware
That no stronger spell is cast than what is read
and each minuscule prepares an epic cross to bear

I speak, of course, of Eden's evil twin
The Dead Sea whore whose hairy legs wrapped sleeping men
What fits she caused both now and then
But Yea! I say 't would matter not but for the stroke of pen!

So score charcoal above your cradles, mum
Pray the vamp should never suck your gentle men
and proffer not your bugaboos to virile Jerusalem

Or else accept that what I say is true
No man nor scroll on earth knows certain what to do
And if by time alone a word behooves repute
I guarantee that thine own fable prove resolute

And so, I say, the heart of darkness lies therein
For the wickedness of woman is not innate
and does not appear at all, except to men
