L'Homme de Bronze
Doc Savage In French
The Marabout List

40 translations of Doc Savage adventures were published by Marabout between 1967 and 1976. Marabout is a popular french paperback publisher, similar to Bantam, Penguin or Corgi in the UK.

Marabout was publishing other series of action-packed adventures in the same collection, explaining the double numbering of the Marabout books. One number (within a colored circle) corresponds to the position within the specific series (Doc Savage, Bob Morane, Dylan Stark, etc.) , the other number, at the bottom, corresponds to the number within the whole Marabout Pocket collection. This also explains the funny numbering of types, as these are used, by french collectors, to depict the whole Marabout collection. As the publication life of Doc Savage did not span the whole duration of the Marabout collection, the type numbering suffers from several holes.

During the 70's only the Doc Savage and Bob Morane series were still published, denoting the relative success of Doc Savage within the french speaking community.

Marabout followed approximately the same printing order as Bantam did, but not all Bantams were translated. The reason for not translating some novels is not known. Marabout had perhaps longer translation delays and could not keep up with Bantam's publication rhythm.

The 1975 movie, that was also displayed "lip synchronized" in french speaking countries, should have given a new impetus to the Doc Savage popularity. Marabout took the opportunity to publish a special movie edition of L'homme de bronze with pictures from the movies. Several out of print novels were also reprinted. Alas, the failure of the movie did not fulfill Marabout's expectations.

The last Doc Savage was published in 1976 and the Marabout Pocket collection disappeared one year later, with the last Bob Morane volume.
