Playboy Jock Kellog was bemoaning the fact that his family fortune was running out while entertaining his friends at a lavish party in London during early 1940. He was interrupted in his revelry by a messenger sending a message from his dying uncle from his estate in rural England.
Jumping in his roadster and racing through the countryside, he remembered that his eccentric uncle was rich and maybe that his financial trouble might be over, he arrived at the adress, but was shocked to see not a grand mansion, but a small thatched cottage. Going inside, he saw many antiques and rarities many dating back to Arthurian times. Finding his uncle on his deathbed, Jock tried to comfort the old man, but he went on deliriously telling him that they were decended from the great sorcererer MERLIN and he was the last in his line and inheritior of the great powers of the mage. He gave Jock an ancient cloak and told him that wearing it would give him those powers.
After his uncle passed away, Jock stood outside of the nightclub wondering what he should do next. A woman fell from a balcony, and he yelled and pointed at her. He was wearing the greek cloak and his speech sounded like a magical spell. The woman stopped in midair, suspended. Jock Kellog knew that the old man was right and set out to start to use his magical abilites to aid mankind.
Going by the name of Merlin, he roamed both England and the European continent, finding out about his powers and learning magic, fighting the Nazi menace at every chance.
After a "chance" meeting with DR. MIST, Merlin began to chant his spells in "backwords speech" similar to other magicians like ZATARA and TOR, whom he had a chance to meet at the inaugural meeting of the ALL-STAR SQUADRON in February, 1942.
He was one of several mystics who,in 1945, responded to the summons of HOURMAN to try and stop the other-dimensional conqueor called STALKER. He, along with Tor, lost their lives, their mystical energies feeding the monster.
Merlin was a mystic of great power, able to battle demigods and travel the globe at will. He was able to summon such creatures as the Pegasus and avatars of gods to do his bidding.
Merlin may have been a member of the sub-branch of humanity known as Homo Magi, since he was able to tap into mystical energies much as the the same way as Zatara. It is not known if his green cloak that gave his powers initially survived his death, or a definite geneological link to the Sixth Century mage known commonly as Merlin.
