He reads old English books about demons. He drives an old Engish car. He has an old English accent. He is, in fact, "Mr. Old English" Rupert Giles. Plus the fact he's an old English librarian. So where does he fit in in Sunnydale "The Hellmouth", California? Duh, he's the Watcher. Watcher- someone who helps the Slayer, fills in when she can't, trains her, and, in his case, undergoes all of the snide comments directed toward him for not having a life. No, he's not a vampire, he is quite alive, just not your idea of a terribly fun-loving person. He's Buffy's Watcher, to be exact. He puts up with Buffy and Xander and Cordelia and gets much help from Willow, Miss Straight-A. At first glance, you'd laugh at poor Giles. He doesn't look like much when it comes to fighting either, but he can slay a vampire all right. Not with Buffy's ease, but well enough. Hey, at least he knows how, which is more than you can say for most old English librarians.
