Two Borg cubes are informing those who they are speedily approaching that existence as
they know it is over. The aliens who are not seen are threatened by the Borg in their usual
domineering way by stating the aliens biological and technological distinctiveness will be added
to their own. Assuring the aliens that resistance is futile, the Borg are zapped by powerful
weapons that completely obliterates the ships.
In what appears as a dark workshop, Janeway entreats DaVinci for a place to work on her
own projects within his shop. They reach an agreement just seconds before Chakotay notifies
Janeway that she is needed in engineering and she tells the computer to end program.
B’Elanna and Chakotay show Janeway on a viewscreen the last transmission sent out by a
probe just before it is deactivated by a Borg drone.
In a officers meeting, Janeway announces to everyone that they are entering Borg territory.
Chakotay shows them a corridor in Borg space devoid of Borg activity and says they have
nicknamed it the Northwest Passage. B’Elanna informs everyone that the Northwest Passage is
full of intense gravimetric distortions caused by quantum singularities.

Voyager is taking all precautions in getting ready for the Borg. The Doctor in sickbay is
showing Kes a Borg hand with two injection tubules that are made for penetrating the victims
skin and then releases nanaprobes inside the bloodstream to assimilate them. The Doctor is
telling Kes that they need to make assimilation antibodies to attack the nanaprobes, but she is
seeing in her own mind these terrible scenes of dismembered Borgs stacked in a pile of
disjointed body parts that make a horrendous collage of death. After asking Kes what is wrong,
the Doctor states that she is having a telepathic experience.
Tuvok enters the bridge and tells the Captain that Kes continues to have telepathic visions of
the death of Borg and the destruction of Voyager.
Harry Kim interrupts the Captain’s conversation with Tuvok to inform her that long range
sensors are picking up transwarp signatures. Vibrations and jolting is felt as Paris informs the
Captain that they have dropped out of warp speed. B’Elanna informs them that some sort of
subspace turbulence is preventing them from making a stable warp field. Soon after Harry Kim
states that fifteen Borg cubes are approaching, they are tossed about helplessly as the Borg catch
up to them and continue on in their haste. One cube probes them with a polaron beam but
continues on with the other cubes having taken no action against Voyager.
Chakotay enters Janeway’s Ready Room to encourage her to join him for a meal. Janeway
turns him down but when she starts quoting previous Captain’s who had encounters with the
Borg, including Jean Luc Picard, Chakotay becomes amused and accuses Janeway of sounding
like the captains she is quoting by using their inflections in her voice.
Janeway becomes reflective and indicates her uncertainty. Chakotay assures her that when
that moment comes they will face it together and comforts her with the statement that, “You are
not alone, Katherine.” She contends that three years ago she didn’t even know his name. “Today
I can’t even imagine a day without you.”
Tuvok and Harry summon the Captain to the bridge to inform her that the power signatures
of the Borg vessels had terminated. Janeway instructs Mr. Paris to set a course for their position.
When they reach the vessels, there is mass destruction of the cubes and most are in fragments.
Tuvok informs the Captain that there are two residual warp engine signatures in the debris. One
is Borg and the other is of unknown origin.
Janeway puts Chakotay in charge of an away team of Tuvok and Harry to investigate the
bio-mass aboard one of the cubes.
All is in disarray on the vessel with the live Borg mainly functioning irrationally or with no
intrusive purpose toward the Voyager crew. Kim calls their attention to the arrangement of Borg
body parts that Kes had seen in one vision and then recounts that she had also made the
statement that the Voyager crew had appeared to be dying in one of her visions.
They investigate the bio-mass that contains anti-matter particles that belong to a warp
propulsion system. When Harry seems incredulous at the bio-matter being a ship, Tuvok informs
him that other species such as the Breen use organic based vessels.
Chakotay commands Harry to download the tactical database from a Borg distribution node
in search of a record of what had taken place before Chakotay entered the bio-ship with
Tuvok.
Tuvok and Chakotay observe organic conduits carrying electrodynamic fluid as an energy
source and bio-array matrix laced with macro peptides that could be used as their computer core.
The wall is regenerating itself where a Borg disrupter beam damaged it. As Tuvok goes into the
chamber, he discovers a Borg drone that has organic tentacles growing all over his body.
Harry leaves the data node when he hears scraping, and one of the Borg nearby makes a hasty retreat.
In sickbay, Kes drops a tray as she envisions Harry screaming and tells the Doctor that Harry is in danger and then emphatically tells him to get the crew off the Borg cube. The Doctor immediately relays the message to Janeway.
When B’Elanna tries to transport them off the cube, she can’t get a lock on them because of
bio-electric interference due to whatever was approaching the away team. She informs the
Captain that she will try an entirely new procedure that B’Elanna just came up which she calls a
skeletal lock--where she locks onto the minerals in their bone tissue.

The pilot of the bioship suddenly comes through a wall with great force and dismembers two
Borg with the forceful swing of his upper appendage. The alien pivots around and makes the
same forceful contact with Harry. He is screaming in agony just at the moment that B’Elanna
beams them off the ship.

Tom informs the Captain that the bioship is powering up as if it is charging some kind of
weapon. Kes has telepathic contact with the pilot of the bioship and faints.

Janeway tells Mr. Paris to get them out of here at maximum warp just seconds before the
bioship hits them with its bright yellow ray from its weapon and sends them lurching in space.
Tom makes the jump to maximum warp and the alien ship does not pursue.

The Doctor informs the Captain that what initially started out as a few stray cells
contaminating Harry’s chest wound had now infused every system in his body. The alien cells
are consuming his body from the inside out - in essence - Mr. Kim is being eaten alive.
After analyzing the Borg tactical database, B’Elanna informs Chakotay that the new aliens
are referred to as Species 8472. They go to the Captain with the information and visuals of 8472
dominating the Northwest Passage. Tuvok informs the Captain that there are 133 bioships and
more approaching from a quantum singularity. B’Elanna localizes the gravimetric distortions
and shows them more bioships entering their space.
Kes feels 8472’s malevolence, a cold hatred. She repeats the phrase, “The weak will perish”
and makes the conclusion that it is an invasion threat and that they mean to destroy
everything.
Janeway and Chakotay discuss the options of getting home through Borg space or remaining
in the Delta quadrant while in the Ready Room. Chakotay leaves and Janeway is in bed when
she decides to go to the holodeck.
Janeway tells DaVinci her quandary about getting home and how she can not see an
alternative, no matter how much she tries to focus her mind. DaVinci informs her that she needs
to seek out a greater imagination by kneeling in prayer. He entreats her to go with him to a
chapel and make an appeal to God. Janeway tells him that wouldn’t work for her. Then she
questions what might happen if instead she appealed to the devil.
Janeway informs the crew in the briefing room that she wants to make an alliance with the
Borg--Voyager’s technology to defeat their new enemy in exchange for safe passage through
Borg space.
When the crew leaves, Chakotay states that what she proposes is too great a risk. He makes
his point with a story about a fox and a scorpion. The scorpion asks the fox to take him on the
fox’s back across the river. The fox says no because he was afraid the scorpion would sting him
and the fox would drown. The scorpion reassured the fox that he would never do that because
they would both drown. The fox agrees to take the scorpion. Halfway across the river the
scorpion stings the fox. As the poison filled the fox’s veins he questions the scorpion as to his
reason because they would both die. The scorpion replied that he could not help himself -- it was
his nature.
Chakotay states that they should turn around and search out other alternatives. That it is
wrong (Prime Directive) to give an advantage to a race that is guilty of murdering millions. He
goes on to state that he knows her and sometimes she does not know when to step back.
Janeway ‘s voice breaks when she determines that she is alone after all when Chakotay does
not give her his approval. He finishes with the statement that she is making a fatal mistake
before exiting.
Voyager make contact with the Borg in a solar system that has three planets. Janeway shows
them a sample of the technology and they beam her onto the Borg vessel. While they are
discussing the terms of their negotiations, 8472 attacks. Eight ships form a circle around a center
ship. The outside eight ships through beams of energy send their power to the center ship that
channels their energy into a concentrated beam and destroys the nearby planet and most of the
Borg ships. Only one Borg cube escapes with Voyager in tow by tractor beam.
