Christies, London : The Maitland Collection, thought lost for many years, has been bought by Boston antiquarian Julian Karswell for $175,000. The collection, assembled by Dr Christopher Maitland during his time in China, was stolen from the archaeologist’s home in 1898. Extension work on the London Underground in 1975 miraculously revealed an underground chamber which proved to be a veritable treasure house of stolen antiquities. The collection was offered up for sale by Dr Maitland’s great nephew, Joseph Ward.
