The world of MIAMI VICE was essentially born thanks to the then successful MTV network. Brandon Tartikoff, president of NBC, wanted to capitalize on the new trend of flashy videos. He called producer Michael Mann, who had worked on numerous NBC productions, and told him that he wanted a new show with "MTV style cops."
