Here's a couple of neat spells for the combat mage without a weapon focus. These spells produce blades of magical energy in the caster's hand which can make a seriously nasty mess of whoever the caster happens to be attacking. Generally, the resultant blade is roughly a foot and a half long, but really good casting can extend that length a little bit. The resultant Mage Sword can actually block an active weapon focus (I've seen it happen!), while Power Sword and the attendant elemental variants can block most anything swung against them.

Well, due
to incorrect thinking on my part, fostered by the version of this spell that
I found in Wig's archive, I unfortunately wrote the spell up wrong the first
time. After re-examining my thinking and going over the descriptions of spell
types and after some criticism on Shadowland, I've rewritten the Mage Sword
spell as a Manipulation. The current version of Mage Sword does Deadly damage,
is resisted by Impact armor and produces a blade with a length equal to the
caster's magic attribute times 10 centimeters. Reach is +.5 for every 50
cm or fraction thereof (round down, as always). Extra successes may be used
to increase the Power (+1 per success) or to increase the length (+10 cm
per 2 successes).
Mage Sword does Deadly Damage, resisted by Impact Armor (this is debatable, it being a mana spell - conversely, all DM's are supposed to have elemental effects, so . . .). Power is identical, save for being a Physical, rather than Mana, spell. The length on Mage Sword and its variants is the caster's Magic Rating times 10cm. Reach is +.5 for every 50cm (or fraction thereof). Extra success may be used to increase the blade's length (+10cm for every two). |
