PUBS
Newtown Hotel - King Street, Newtown. More poofs than dykes frequent this venue, but it's worth a visit from anyone because the dance floor is quite large (compared to the Imperial) and the music is almost always fantastic. Our only piece of advice is to avoid the Simone Troy drag shows like the plague - "she" hates women and is incredibly bitchy, especially to those poofs who don't fit a particular stereotype. This is the place to go earlier in the night - then everyone moves onto the Imperial.
Imperial Hotel - Erskineville Road, Erskineville. The main claim to fame of this establishment is that it was where parts of Priscilla--Queen of the Desert was filmed. There are 3 bars--the main one in the front which has two pool tables and lots of dykes; the cabaret room which has a raised dance floor and drag shows Thursday through to Sunday (which are fabulous); and the cellar bar, all dark and thumping on Friday and Saturday nights.
RESTAURANTS/CAFES
Indian Fantasy - 169 King Street, Newtown. This is a great place to eat with a group of friends, the food it delicious, and it doesn't cost very much. It is especially affordable if you've got a group of at least 6 people, in which case you can have about 5 different dishes to share, along with rice and naan bread, for about $12.00 each. But watch out for those bastard cloves in the rice!
Café Brontosaurus - Erskineville Road, Erskineville. Burgers, burgers and dinosaurs! What a mix! And while you may have to wait for your burger, it's well worth the wait. Besides, you can play with the toy dinosaurs or read up on them. And, yes, it is gay friendly--with cute women to serve you.
Café Blue - King Street, Newtown. I can only speak for the bagels and ice cream sodas, but they are fabulous! The great thing about this place is that you can pick and choose from a huge list of toppings, what you would like on your bagel/rosetta etc. No getting stuck with whatever the chef thinks people like. Plus there's all the usual things like pastas and burgers etc. They also have a large range of desserts, if you just want a snack.
King Street Deli - King Street, Newtown. This place has the best "gourmet" burgers in the land... but beware of the occasional unexpected chilli that may appear in your pattie (yum!). The decor is pleasant, as is the music. Note: "pretty" boys particularly welcome in this cafe (hence the alternative title "Cafe Thin Homosexual"), though we have seen quite a few women working there recently!
Café Feel - King Street, Newtown. A great little café, with cute tables jutting out from the wall and lots of (apparently) cute waiters.
Sublimity - King Street, Newtown. This is a very homey eating place, with good music (don't go if you have an aversion to George Michael's latest album), a quiet atmosphere, very friendly, helpful staff. It also serves "real" food, rather than just the usual cafe type food, and changes it's menu fairly regularly. Recommended highly by "Alex of Newtown", who is proud to be a well-recognised customer of this establishment.
New Addison, Chinese TakeAway - 67 Erskineville Road, Erskineville. Suspiciously cheap, but no matter how many times we order food from this place, it's always perfect.
GENERAL SHOPS
Galaxy Bookshop - 222 Clarence Street, Sydney. If you're a science fiction fan visiting Sydney and want to catch up with some reading, this is the place for you to do some shopping.
ABC Bookshop - Queen Victoria Building, Sydney. To satisfy all your obsessions for old, crappy British TV series'.
The Bookshop Newtown - King Street, Newtown. This is a great place to start when visiting Sydney, as the front section of the shop is devoted to the various community Gay and Lesbian newspapers and magazines, as well as having a noticeboard where you can find out all the hip and happening places to go. The shop itself is full to the brim with queer books of all shapes and sizes, as well as a great selection of gift cards and postcards. And if you need any help, the assistants are almost always incredibly helpful - especially Susan - you'll know it's her if she bounds up to you, telling you about the last thing she read, and generally raving (in a good way)!
Better Read Than Dead. This is a "relatively" new bookstore, which is worth visiting just for the atmosphere. It has the standard range of books, with some greeting cards thrown in (incl. Great Wallace and Grommit ones), but the colour scheme is really relaxing, with wooden floors and couches to collapse on.
House & Holy Sheet- King Street, Newtown. If you're planning a longer stay in Sydney and have the money to furnish a house with gorgeous knick-knacks, many of which are useless yet strangely compelling... pay a visit to one of these stores.
BOTTLE SHOP
Erskineville Cellars (with cute employees!) - Erskineville Road. Just mentioning this because of the "eye candy"... probably not a good enough reason to go out of your way to visit. Though, if you are visiting someone in Erskineville, pop down to the local Cellars (one of 3 liquor stores in the tiny shopping village!), buy your host a bottle of red, and say hi to Allison for us.
