I finally retired my old 486 and got a new Pentium II with CD-ROM player
so I (for the first time in my life) actually BOUGHT a PC game - this one.
I haven't played it as much as i'd like and haven't got that far - but here's
a little about the start of the game. I haven't played that much in predator
mode, so there's not much about predators here...
In this game, you can choose which species you'd like to be -
predator, human (marine) or alien. There is also three different levels of
difficulty.
The three different species has their kind of weapons, their pros and cons.
Alien mode
WEAPONS: The alien have no weapons - it is one. It can use it's tounge, claw and hit
with the tail. Clawing causes least injury - but is leathal. You gain
lifeforce by doing this. You can claw your way through grids. You gain clawing
by pressing the left mousebutton. If you feel like clawing several times, just
keep the button pressed in - then you'll claw with a terrifying speed.
Hitting with the tail has more power and you can burst your way through grids
and destroy turrets and other things you feel like (tv's, computers, you name
it) destroying. You gain hitting with the tail or tail-whipping by pressing the
right mouse button. You gain a more powerful strike if you hold the button
pressed down. The tounge is the most effective way of killing your victims.
You also gain full lifeforce with one 'live headbite' - using your tounge on
a still living victim. You gain points by this. It might be a little difficult
in the beginning, as your victims move and for biting, their heads need to be
directly in the center of the screen. If they move out of the center, the bite
mode comes off. You can tell if you're in bite mode because the alien's teeth
appears in the upper and lower screen.
BONUS: You can walk in the roof and on the walls!!! At least
the marines DON'T look up! most of the time, anyway....
CONS: All of this is very effective, but the con about this is that you gotta be
practically on top of your victim. You can't kill someone from a distance,
as both marine and predators can.
ENEMIES: Since there are enough of enemies that would
love to kill you and you can't kill them from a distance you have to stalk and
when going for the kill using your speed. Take the civilians who are alone and
without weapons first - less risk of being killed. The civilians with molotivs
are a bitch. It's not always you see them holding that tiny molotov - but,
believe me! They kill you! Basically - all fire, if it doesn't kill you, it's
very bad for your health. You might survive a good frying, but with very reduced
resources! With the marines - use your speed and an element of surprise. Attack
from behind. Or else they'll make lots and lots of hole in you! You survive a
couple of hits, but not that many!
Marine
WEAPONS: You have the best weapons of all the species! You
have smartguns, pulserifles, flamethrowers and grenadelaunchers! The pulserifle
has 99 rounds and a pump-action mode. Ammunition and pulserifles are found
separately. The smartgun have 300 rounds. The flamethrower is used to set things
on fire. Grenadelaunchers have 6 mags with 3 different kinds of grenades. SADAR
is a rocketlaunch system. It is strongly advised NOT to use this in a confined
area! Minigun is a gun from hell with 800 rounds. It might be the hottest gun
the marine got, but it is difficult to use. You have to stand still if you want
some hits on your goal. WARNING: all these weapons kan kill or injure yourself
as well as your enemies!!!
When you start your game, you only have a pulserifle and this might run out of
ammo! So always look for ammo and guns!
EQIPMENT: You start with full life and armor and most of
the equipment mentioned here, except medkits, armorunits and jet packs.
Movementdetector: Is a device who picks up any movement about 180 degrees in
front of the marine. It picks up ANY movement so lifts and flares have scared
the shit out of me several times. It is hard to tell where exactly the enemy
comes from. Aliens might run on the roof and run extremely fast and jump behind
you...
Imageenhancher: with this you can see in absolute darkness. Direct light will
overload the enhancher. With this mode on - the movementdetector comes off.
Armor: this protects the marine from acid blood and smaller trauma.
Medkit: restores health to 100%
Flares: the marine have unlitmited access to flares and might use up to 4 at
once. They stick to any surface they hit and might use insted of the imageenhancher.
ENEMIES: - Aliens and predators. I've only encountered aliens.
Predators come later in the game. The alien is a terrible opponent. It is not
easy to spot and often you hear it hissing before even suspecting it's presence...
It is very fast and if it manages to get behind you, you are, most of the time,
excuse the expression - fucked! It runs on the walls and roofs, it jumps, it
stalks... even with a ton of equipment, the best way of staying alive is NEVER
letting your guard down! (and run as hell on the right places)
