Christie is a cool, laidback member of the 'Betty'. He is there mostly for protection, I guess. Call and Vreiss are the mechanics, Elgyn is the leader and Hillard is the pilot. Johner mostly go around hurting people, while Christie has no such obvious role. He has a special friendship with Vreiss, which probably goes longer back in time than the time they have spend together on the 'Betty', which might be some time.
Christie never panics, never gives in to whims. When Elgyn theatens Call, planning to kill her, Christie don't give a damn, but is the first of the crewmembers willing to listen to her. But this is only so because 'Father' tells about unauthorized opening of some cages. He is highly logical.
When Ripley joins the small group of survivors, Call freaks out, saying that Ripley is not to be trusted. Christie interrupts with the words: 'I don't trust nobody' (By the way - it's the same quote Cpt. Dallas says to Ripley in 'Alien' when she says she don't trust Ash...). He even hands over a rifle to the USM-marine DiStephano.
Christie is the only person I can recall dying of suicide rather than aliens or accidents in an 'alien' movie and it happens like this:
Christie is climbing up a ladder with Vreiss on his back when an alien attachs. Christie shoots at the alien and it replies with spitting acid in Christie's face. Christie can't hold on to the ladder any longer and lets go. Vreiss manages to grab it and holds both himself and Christie by the arms. Christie and Vreiss calls for Johner, begging him to shoot the alien. Johner shoots it dead, but it has gotten a grip around Christie's ancle and is not letting go, even in death. Vreiss can't hold up the great weight of the alien and is about to let go. Instead of both Christie and Vreiss falling to their deaths, Christie cuts over the ropes holding him and Vreiss together. He and the dead alien falls down in the water, never to be seen again.
