Lt. S. Gorman

Gorman was the mission's commander. He had about 38 missions - simulated ones. From the start, the marines distrust their commander. Comments like 'the new commander is too good to sit with us' shows this clearly.
Gorman was insecure of himself and his crew. This was a new experience, and the tough 'jarheads' don't make it any easier on their rookie commander.
After the landing on the planets surface, the marines acted by the book, following Gormans instructions. They did so until they were attacked. When panic broke loose, Gorman tried to do the right thing, but he didn't know what to do or how to do it. Ripley tried to make him tell the marines to retreat, but he froze in terror. Ripley then took control over the situation and get the remaining soldiers out of the hive. During their flight, a small container fell from the roof of the armored vehicle and hits Gorman in the head, leaving him unconcious for a major part of the movie.
He wakes up in time to flee when the aliens break into the lab in which the survivors have retreated. When Vasquez gets injured by the acid blood of one of the aliens, Gorman finally digs up some courage and goes back to her and tries to fight off the aliens. His fear was gone now, as if the knowledge that he was going to die calmed him down and made him more aimed at one goal: the survival of his crew and the destruction of the aliens. Vasquez and Gorman tires to fight off the aliens in vain when Gorman reaches for a grenade. When he is about to push the button, Vasquez grabs his hand, lays her fingers over his and together they push the button, blowing up themselves and a couple of aliens. In this final moment, Vasques (who previously wanted to kill Gorman) acknowledged Gorman as one of them - a jarhead.
