Prolog: The major corporation on Earth is the 'Company' Weyland-Yutami. Among their business is mining and they have ships that carries mineral ore from off world colonies to Earth. One of those ships are the 'Nostromo' with it's seven crewmembers. However, this rutine tour has some other purpose than just delivering ore...
Story: The first shot is of the cockpit of the 'Nostromo'. Reflections of computers is seen on the space-suit helmets. Then doors open to a dark room, and air gushes into the dark room. The room lightens up the cold, white room and we see seven petal like glass shield rising up, revealing seven people in cryostasis, just starting to wake up. First up is Kane, looking dazed and sleepy. The others moves around.
The entire crew is having breakfast. They are eating, drinking and talking, happy because their mission is soon over, happy to soon be home.
Cpt. Dallas is called by the main computer, 'Mother'. He enters the computer room, asking what's up.
At the same time, the crew are manning their posts. They are confused when they don't get contact with the controlcenters on Earth, and even more confused when they don't recognize the solar system. They are in a completely different solar system.
Dallas is then rejoining his crew. 'Mother' has told him that she picked up a strange signal. It is basic procedure to check out signals made by a seemingly intelligent source, so 'Mother' woke them up to check it out. Dallas also tell that they are only half-way to Earth. The crew sighs and are not happy with the whole business. Parker starts immediately to fuzz about his and Brett's pay. He and his buddy think that they get too little of the reward from saving an eventual stranded ship. Ripley tells them that they will get their share but Parker is unhappy about the whole business.
Cpt. Dallas decide to go down on the planet's surface to check it out. They all go down to the planet surface in the landing vehicle. But when they land on the rocky surface, something breaks in the vehicle. The engineers start to work with the problem right away. Ripley call Parker and Brett over the intercom asking how long time it would take to fix it. Brett shrug and tell Parker that the repairs would take 12 hours. Parker tell Ripley that it would at least take 24 hours.
At the same time they decide to check out the strange signals. Dallas, Kane and Lambert walk to the source of the signal, while Ripley, Ash, Parker and Brett is left in the landing vehicle. Ash is monitoring the search party and Ripley tries to figure out the exact meaning of the unknown signal.
The search party find a crashed alien space ship. They get closer, and then the signal back to the vehicle and Ash is breaking up and eventually disappears. Ripley come in to join Ash, and she tells him that she belive that the signal is not an emergency call, but rather a warning. She say to Ash that it would be best if she followed the away party and told them that it might be dangerous. Ash reply that it would not be necessary.
The search party enters the spacecraft. They find a dead alien pilot, and it look like it has grown out of it's chair. The bones of the unlucky pilot is examined closer. The bones have turned to stone. They notice something very strange - it's ribbs is bend outward, just like something had exploded inside, trying to get out. Kane notice a hole in the floor. It is decided that one should go down to investigate so in the end Dallas and Lambert lowers Kane down into the hole. He finds a huge room and the floor is covered with leathery, round objects that look like eggs. Kane walks on a ridge reaching from the wall and further into the middle of the room. Suddenly he stumble and fall down amongst the eggs. Kane reassure Dallas and Lambert that he is all right. He stop to watch one of the eggs. The egg itself is translucent and inside Kane see something moving. The egg open up and Kane move closer to watch it. Suddenly something jump out of the egg and attaches itself to Kane's head.
Dallas and Lambert drag Kane to the landing ship. Ripley ask what happened to Kane, and Dallas answer that something attached itself to him. Ripley don't want Kane inside, or if he was to be let inside, he should be rushed into quarantene immediately. Ash override the system and open the outher door.
Ripley is furious that Ash opened the door, when she told him not to. Ash answer that he was following the captain's orders. Ripley tell Ash that when Dallas (and Kane, who is second in command) is outside the ship, and Ripley is on board, she is the commander of the ship. Ripley tell Dallas that he wouldn't have let them in if he was in Ripley's shoes.
They put Kane in observation
Dallas wathces when Ash try to remove the hugger. It is impossible to tear it off Kane without the hugger ripping his face off. Ash makes an alternative plan - he want to cut off one of the thing's fingers. He make a small cut in the thing´s finger, and suddenly yellow fluid pour out of it. It eat it's way through the floor with an amazing speed. The crew, who is watching from outside the infirmary, run down one floor, just to see the acid burn it's way further down. After a few decks, the acid stop eating at the metal. When all are back at their posts, Ash and Dallas are discussing what to do next. They come to the conclution that it is far too dangerous to try to do something with Kane. They just leave him as he are.
The crew is stunned. They don't know what to do. Then Ash call Dallas over the intercom. He and the rest of the crew rush to the infirmary. When Ash, Dallas and Ripley enter the room, they see that the hugger is gone. It have to be somewhere inside the room, so they descide to look for it. Such a dangerous creature can't walk around without them knowing where it is. Ripley is told to stay away from the corners. She look under the bench. When she straighten up, the hugger land on her sholder. Ripley panic and brush it off her sholder. It lie still, dead or dying.
Dallas, Ripley and Ash discuss what to do with the dead hugger. Ash is facinated by the creature, and want to keep it. Ripley is very skeptic about this. If it have acid for blood, think of the damage it could do when it was dead and rotting!
Suddenly Kane wake up. The crew come to the infirmary to greet him. They ask how he feel and he tell them he is fairly all right, except for some nightmares of being strangled. Then he state that he is hungry.
The crew gather for a last dinner before going back into hypersleep. They chat and eat and is very happy about going back home... Then Kane start to retch. Parker make a joke about the food. Then Kane clutch his chest in pain. Suddenly he start to scream and throws himself around on the table, having severe spasms. The other crew members try to keep Kane steady, as they belive that he is having some kind of seizure. Then Kane calm down for a second, and blood suddenly burst from Kane's chest. Kane start to scream again and a tiny creature burst out of Kane's chest. The crew stare amazed on it, and the creature stare back before it scream and run away quickly.
The remaining crew is stunned. They can't even figure out a relatively good plan, so in the end they find out that they will try to catch the creature and throw it out of the 'Nostromo'. Ash come up with a kind of search-machine. It notice microscopic changes in air density and should tell if the creature was in front of it. The crew divide into two groups. Dallas, Ash and Lambert in one group, Ripley, Brett and Parker in the other.
Ripley's group suddenly get a reading on the searcher. Something is inside a container. Brett, Parker and Ripley prepare a net in which they could catch it. When the container door open, they throw themselves over the tiny creature. It hiss and then Brett lets it go. Ripley and Parker ask why the hell he did that for. Brett tell that it was only Jonesy, Ripley's cat. Parker and Ripley tell Brett that he has to go get Jones, or else the cat would disturb them in the further search. Brett walk off.
Brett search through the ship. He walk through corridors and stop for just a while under a leakage, soaking his cap, cooling off. Then he find Jonesy between some cargo. He call to the cat, who first start to move towards him. Then the cat suddenly stop, like paralyzed of fear. It then hiss towards something behind Brett. Brett turn around, and the now grown alien shoot its tongue through his head.
The remaing crew gathers again. They discuss the new situation, and come to the conclution that it must have grown real big and nasty and that it travel through the ventilation system. But the original solution still stand: to get the creature out of the ship. Someone say that most animals are afraid of fire, and perhaps they should try to burn the fucker out of the ventilation system. Ripley volunteers to get in there with a flame-thrower. Dallas think that he should do it. In the end it is Dallas who decide, and his desition is that he goes, and so it is done. Ripley and Lambert sit by the ventilation controls, shutting every opening behind Dallas, so he woun't be surprised by an attack from behind. They communicate through head-sets. Dallas enter the vent system. With him is the flamethrower. At first, Ripley and Lambert don't get any reading of the alien. Suddenly it appears, moving straight towards Dallas. Lambert panic and shout instructions to Dallas, while Ripley try to get some information through. Everything fail, and Dallas is attacked and killed by the alien. All that is left is his flamethrower.
The crew panic. Lambert want to escape in the lifepod, while Ripley suggest that they should continue the original plan - to burn it out of the system. Besides - the lifepod, or shuttle, have no room for four people. Parker don't want to leave without killing it. Parker leave to fill Dallas' empty flamethrower. Ripley want to know if Ash or Mother knew anything more or had a plan. Ash reply that he and Mother is still calculating. Ripley is unsatisfied with the answer and leave to find her own answers. After all, she is now the commanding officer.
Ripley walk to the main computer room. She then try to lure information out of Mother. Suddenly she finds a message that reads "science officers eyes only". The message is an order. The order is from the company and it tell that the space ship 'Nostromo' has now a new destination: to bring back the new, unknown lifeform. All other priorities is cancelled. Ripley is shocked of this new information. Suddenly she notice that Ash has entered 'Mother' without making a noise. He try to calm her by telling that there is a reason for all. Ripley start to cry hysterically before she run out of the small room. She try to leave Ash, but everytime she get near a door, Ash shuts it. Ripley suddenly notice the white blood that run down Ash' face. Ash grabs a hold of Ripley's hair, but she pull away. She crawl on the floor, trying to get away from Ash. Ash grabs Ripley once more and throw her across the room. He is constantly twitching. He then grabs Ripley again and throw her on a table. Ash roll a magazine to a tube and places it over Ripley's mouth and try to force it inside Ripley´s throat. She come to herself and struggle to get away, but she can't get out of Ash´s grip. Parker is back, and he try to get Ash to release Ripley. Ash reply by scratching Parker. Parker hit Ash in the head with a blunt object. This makes Ash start bouncing around the room while he is sprouting white goo from his mouth and makes funny noises. Parker hit again when Ash stagger towards Parker, Ripley and Lambert, who just arrived. Ash' head get detached, showing tubes, white blood and opic nerves. Parker hits again and again until the headless body of Ash lie still. But when Parker touch Ash, he starts moving again. Parker end up on the floor with Ash on top. Lambert, who dragged Ripley away from Parker and Ash, pulls at Ash, and in the end she electocutes him.
Ripley reactivate Ash. There are questions to be answered. She want to know how to kill the alien. Ash answer that it is impossible to kill it. He also say that it is an perfect organism - both in structure and in behavior. Lambert say that Ash admires it. Ash say he admires it's purity. That it is a survivor that lived without emotions. Just as Ripley is to deactivate him again, Ash stop her. He say that he can't lie about their chances, "but you have my sympathy". Ripley rip out the cables that gave Ash life. The trio now deside to leave. The only way to get rid of the alien must be to blow up the whole ship. When they leave, Parker turn around and fries the pieces left of Ash.
Ripley and Parker discuss the blow-up procedure. Parker and Lambert are going to get cooling liquid for the oxygen-whatever, while Ripley is going to get the shuttle ready. Ripley make the small shuttle ready for their departure, when she suddenly hears her cat, Jones, cry.
Lambert and Parker are getting cooling liquid in bottles from a storage room.
Ripley go to look for her cat. She have a cage to put the cat in. She call for him. A chair moves.
Lambert and Parker have gotten some bottles to the shuttle and Lambert checks on them.
Ripley is nervous because she know that the alien could be anywhere. Then the cat suddenly run out of his hiding place. Ripley catches him and put him in the cage.
Lambert and Parker are still working in the cargobay. Lambert throw the bottles on the floor and Parker lift the bottles up on a wheeler. Lambert suddenly catche a glimpse of something. Parker see it too. Lambert turn around, facing the alien, paralyzed of fear.
Ripley pick up her flamethrower and the cage with the cat when she hear Parker yell to Lambert. She hear that the alien is with them.
The alien places itself between Lambert and Parker, making it impossible for Parker to shoot it without killing Lambert too.
Ripley listen to Parker's yells and Lamberts desperate cries. She try to talk to them over the intercom.
The alien is moving closer to Lambert and then Parker attacks the alien. It hits him with the tail. The alien picks up Parker from the floor and holds him.
Ripley start to run towards the cargobay.
Parker scream and bashes around, but to no use. The alien has a good grip on him. The alien's tounge crack Parkers scull. The alien now turns to Lambert. It wrap it's tail around Lambert's leg. There is no escape.
Ripley runs towards the cargobay when the air is filled of Lambert's screams and strange noises. Lambert's high scream of fear is cut in the middle.
The two corpses of Lambert and Parker is paced on top of something, so that they hang with their arms down. Lambert's arm is still moving when Ripley at last is in the cargobay. Now there is no time for hesitation. Ripley run to a special room where the self-destruct device is. She activate the self-destruct sequence and a loud siren is heard and Mother is counting down. Ripley gets Jones and the thrower and run towards the shuttle. In one of the corridors, next to the shuttle, she suddenly become aware of a moving shadow. She throw Jones on the floor and is a moment paralyzed of fear before she get on her feet and run.
The alien bend down, watching Jones.
Ripley is back in the self-destruct room, trying to stop the self-destruction, but is just a second too late. Now she has absolutely no choice. If she is going to survive, she need to get to the shuttle. She get back the same way she came. In the corridor where she saw the alien she find Jones, whole, unharmed. She pick up the cage and gets to the shuttle. She get the shuttle moving and out of danger before the 'Nostromo' explode. Ripley leans back, tired of everything and probably glad that the nightmare is finally over.
She prepares to go into hypersleep. She puts Jones in a cryo-tube and get herself undressed. She make the final adjustments and is pushing the final buttons when suddenly an alien arm is streched out, just by her head. She stands still for a moment. The alien is on board the shuttle! She hurries towards the spacesuits, looking for cover, but the alien isn't chasing her. It stretches once more and seems to be asleep. Ripley gets into one of the spacesuits. The alien yawns and the pale tounge is slowly getting out of the alien's mouth, showing all the small, silvery teeth in it. Ripley puts on a helmet. She pick up a kind of harpoon - gun and then sits in a chair and straps herself to it. The alien move slightly. Ripley spray the alien with cooling fluid. It awakens, screams and falls out of it's hiding place. Ripley turn her back on the alien. In the corner of the eye she see that the alien is ready to attack. Ripley scream and opens the airlock. The alien is sucked out of the shuttle, but manages to get a hold of the door and start to pull itself in. Ripley shoots the harpoon in it. The alien looses it's grip and is sucked out. The shell of the harpoon was connected to the gun with a wire and the sudden jerk when the alien is sucked out, rips the harpoongun out of Ripley's hands. It gets stuck in the door. The alien hangs on in the other end. It drifts towards and into the thrusters. Ripley turns the engines on, and the alien is toast.
The final scenes is of Ripley, petting her cat, making the final entry of the ship's log.
