Trivia

Names and their origin
The spacecraft of the alien movie's name is Nostromo. The name is made of two words. The first, 'Nostro' is an outdated italian accountant's experession, meaning: 'Our'. The last part: 'uomo' means īManī. So - the full meaning of Nostromo is "Our Man". The spaceshuttle in which Ripley escapes the 'Nostromo' is the Narcissus. Narcissus was a greek god or demi-god who fell in love with his own reflection in a river, with the result he fell on his head and drowned in the river.
The ideas for the 'Nostromo' and the 'Narcissus' names came from a classic novella by some famous english writer named Joseph Conrad. Nostromo and Sulaco appears in this book.
The computer's name is 'Mother'. The first alien movie was the first and last time the computer's name was 'mother'. In Aliens and Alien 3, they don't communicate with the ship's main computer. In Alien Rez, is the main computer renamed 'Father', and with a male voice. 'Mother', of course, has a female voice.

Irritating Scientific Mistakes That Just Can't Be Justified and just plain movie-bloops

Uh...what was your highest level of education when it comes to science??
Ain't it strange that in all - ALL sci-fi movies, including this one, there is sound in outher space? Explotions, motor-roars and the like. The fact is: sound is just waves in molecular structures. In outher space, there are molecular structures, but the atoms and molecules are so far from eachother that no wave can be stared - this means: THERE ARE NO SOUND IN SPACE! - so just quit all those stupid sound-effects!

Uh...what was your highest level of education when it comes to science II??
There is also a well known effect of zero gravity that all sci-fi writers/directors don't care about. In zero g, you can turn off your engines when you reach max speed - no object will slow down any object, so you don't need to burn all that fuel! - YOU DON'T NEED THE ENGINES BURNING ALL THE TIME!

Work titles
The original title of Dan O'Bannons story was named 'Memory'. This changed to 'Star Beast' and later on it became 'Alien'
