This letter is all one big blob, so I ask that you just skip over the episodes you haven't seen. Now, who was watching, or at least taped, the all day XF viewer's choice marathon? I didn't watch it all, but when things hadn't wound up yet or had already wound down, I went to watch. And I got all twelve hours on tape! So, here's my running commentary on the top twelve (which really was the top eight, as the two trilogies were grouped and even voted for together.
Pilot: I wasn't suprised this ep made the top eight. It's a great general starting-up ep, no govenrment conspiracy yet, just good, solid weirdness and relationship-building. I like that ep.
Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"- I put this ep here because it is the complete opposite of pilot. This is NOT your standard ep. I have heard so much about it that as soon as it was announced I sat down to watch it, no matter what, and accepted no interruptions. It was SO GOOD!!!!! From the plot twists, which made the episode feel like getting stuck on one of those cloverleafs and never being able to get out, to the incredible parody that it was, to the bleeps, it was HYPER-SPIFFY-AWESOME-COOL!!!!, which is about the highest complement I am capable of giving. I spent the ENTIRE last half laughing, I think.
Duane Barry trilogy: I LOVE the first episode. It is just... cool. I don't know why. And it has the infamous red spedoes scene, of course :~)). There are roughly two groups of responders to that scene: those who stare and faint and, once revived, get a tape and replay it over and over again. Then there are those who grimace and look away. I fall into a tiny category in between: I laugh myself silly. But, anyway. The other two eps, especially One Breath, are SO moving... One Breath, the first time I saw it, I was crying SO hard. It is one of the rare episodes (I've counted five) where Mulder is actually crying. I love this trilogy.
Humbug- Cool ep! Love it!
Anasazi- Didn't I write a review on how spiffen-wonderful this trilogy is already? I was crying here, too. In some places.
Memento Mori- Not only really really important to the mythology, really moving, very One Breath-ish, but with more Commando-Mulder making an appearance. More Lone Gunman. But not quite as good. Moving. Yeah.
Home- I left the least for last. UGH! I HATE this episode!! It goes a bit into the partners'psyche, with a few good jokes, but over all, it was gross and morbid and really sucked. Kill this ep! I think the only reason this ep made it was begcause HOME, the Humble followers Of Morbid Episodes, were voting like mad.
There we go. Can someone actually write back this time?? PLEASE??? Thank you. And, remember, I have it all on tape if you want to borrow it.
