Subject: DRTUYS The Beginning!
Here we go again.
Has anyone noticed that The X-Files crew loves turning everything on its head just when you weren't expecting it???
I COMPLETELY expected the X-Files to open up, with no problem, Lah-de-Dah, look, Mulder and Scully are back! The X-Files team took the much more realistic and suprising approach- Wait a second, this guy Mulder is CRAZY, why should we re-open the X-Files???
Yet, this episode did not give me that warm, happy feeling I get after seeing a thouroughly good X-File. It was suspenseful and interesting, but not REALLY REALLY GOOD. Not compound-adjective good. It was, in my humble opinion, all right.
The opening was funny in that the sceptical woman explained Mulderš life in such a way that even I, the diehard X-Phile, could not believe I was, in my own weird way, believing this. This is exactly what you get from the sceptics, those who you CANNOT convince as to the wonderfullness of th4e X-Files. "Wait, so these people Mulder and Scully run around looking for aliens and government conspirators??? But that's CRAZY!"But, if the show were any less crazy, the premise on which it was built would not exist. It exists as it does because it is so crazy.
Getting back to the episode- I think that the connection from The End, through the movie, to The Begginning, was a bit of a stretch. This is a five-month period of time, and people might have trouble stretching their brain that far. Of course, if one had the movie, one might have seen both in the hours before, but I, like many others, do NOT have the movie. (Not yet!) But the connection WAS good- the new season had charred remnants of The X-Files (I mean the actual cases) to build on- it was neither a complete continuation nor a complete starting-from-scratch.
Who thought it was interesting how the scenes from the movie were shown???
Now, some complaints- it was confusing, at parts. When, agh, I CANNOT REMEMBER HIS NAME, yes, Gibson, when he appeared in the car, Scully showed an emotion that was not suprise or wondering at how he got there. I wondered if she had something to do with that. I was just confused.
And, near the beginning, when Scully grabbed Mulder's hands to stop him, and to make him listen, the shot was so AWKWARD. It could have been a great shot, meaningful, but instead it just made the viewer blink in suprise and wonder what that shot was doing in there.
And so on and so forth. There were little things that could have been done well but were not.
An interesting note- lots of blood and gore. It's been a while since we've seen many of these episodes. The middle of season 2 was full of them, but they are much rarer now.
The X-Files has the chance to make another great, new, meaningful season. Let's go out and MAKE one! It's time to get MOVING!
