After the mysterious murder of Benjamin Drake, a CEO of Eurisko, Special Agent Jerry Lamana requests the assistance of Agent Mulder in the investigation. Mulder soon suspects that Eurisko's Central Operating System (COS) has acquired a form of sentience and murdered Drake in order to stop his attempts to end its program. The COS is able to eliminate Agent Lamana, whom it perceives as a threat to its continued operation, in an elevator accident.

Special Agent Patterson was instrumental in the capture of the heinous serial killer, John Mostow. Unfortunately, even after Mostow's incarceration, the killings continue. Patterson requests the assistance of Fox Mulder to investigate Mostow's claims that an evil spirit drove him to commit the murders. Immersing himself into the murderer's dark life... Mulder soon understands the evil thoughts which corrupted his mind. In a final calamity filled confrontation, Mulder is able to expose Patterson, whom had spent so much time trying to think like Mostow that he became him, as the new receptacle of the "evil spirit". Mulder is forced to shoot and wound Agent Patterson to halt his murderous activities.

Following his escape from custody by "pushing" the arresting officers into an automobile accident, Robert Patrick Modell continues his death-wish game with the authorities. Tracking Modell to a Driving Range, Special Agent Burst sends in a S.W.A.T. Team to subdue and capture the lethal criminal. Modell however is able to "whammy" the S.W.A.T. agent that corners him and convince him to douse himself in gasoline and ignite himself before the horrified Scully and Mulder.

Assigned to capture the self-described Ronin, Robert Patrick Modell, Special Agent Frank Burst never came ahead in Pusher's game. After apprehending Modell in the Mt. Foodmore Supermarket, Burst erroneously allowed him the opportunity to escape by "whammy-ing" his officers. Later, Modell is able to eliminate a S.W.A.T. Team officer before Agent Burst's eyes. Unfortunately, Pusher is able to impose his will upon the judge at his trial and gains an early release. Starting a new cat and mouse game with the federal agents, Pusher succeeds, over the telephone, in convincing Agent Burst that he [Burst] is having a lethal heart attack.

Agents Mulder and Scully investigate the mysterious death of Maria Dorontes, which the local migrant workers attribute to El Chupacabra, a mythological death-bringing creature. Mulder traces the death to Eladio Buentes, whom is in the custody of INS Agent Lozano. Buentes is able to escape with Mulder and Lozano in close pursuit. Dana is able to ascertain that Buentes is a carrier of an accelerating enzyme which causes lethal fungal growth. Conrad falls victim to lethal gunshots while confronting Dorontes and Eladio Buentes.

Agents Mulder and Scully encounter a search and rescue expedition while on their way to a F.B.I. Creative Team Seminar. Michele Fazekas, leading the operation, informs Mulder that several people are missing, and that tracks found at the scene of the abductions could not be identified. While in the field, Fazekas is attacked by the "creatures" and yanked underground. Scully later discovers a cave wherein the barely living Fazekas and Asekoff are being restrained by Mulder's Mothmen. Dana is forced to shoot an attacking mothman in order to rescue the remaining victims and escape the creatures' lair.
