Opening Manuevers

Game Date: 09/22/06
Initial forays.

Note: I'm going to have to be brief. I don't have the time to do a full-up narration this week.

Mid-Octavus

Donna Pietra, left to her own devices, did some research.

Not long after that, Don Antonio packed up his wife, her student, and Elsa for Caligari lands. He had been appointed a military governor of the conquered area.

The first thing to get in order was the pacification of Caligari partisans lurking in the countryside. The partisans - mostly older and younger men, not prime fighters - were easily defeated by Elsa's troops once they were cornered. For having killed Mondavi soldiers, they were executed.

Nemise du Arrent Mondavi did visit Salvador, complicating his life somewhat. The marchessa was recruited by the Daughters at the time of her engagement to Gallisus. They had hoped that, as the future Princess Mondavi, she could influence Gallisus toward more freedoms for women. Their hopes are even higher now that it looks like she might be a queen someday. That, of course, means supporting Mondavi's current activities, which not everyone does... And, since Nemise and Gallisus ended up getting along like oil and water, Nemise had Celestina sent to be her husband's courtesan, in the hope that she'll have more influence there.

Angelo and Cristoforo watched as Sieger's Eisen, somewhat protected by dracheneisen shields, charged Caligari's ether cannons and fired crossbows at the men shooting them. It was insane and suicidal, but it worked long enough to allow the main body of Sieger's men to charge the walls and breach them. Angelo and Cristoforo slipped away to find Beatrice. They located her in a tower, trapped on an upper balcony, throwing pinlike knives at Mateo Bianco. At Angelo's direction, Cristoforo charged Mateo. The two struggled, and Mateo fell out a window into the stone courtyard.

Beatrice was not too happy to see her rescuers. She had concluded, not unreasonably, that Antonio had sent Angelo to seduce her and get her off Caligari Island so he could sink it without her interference. Angelo protested, insisting that he knew nothing about Antonio's plans and had never even tried to keep Beatrice from investigating his family's strands, which of course he would have done if he had known there was anything to hide. Her reply was lost in a rumbling and shaking of the fortress - Vincenzo Caligari making good his escape in a Syrneth flying device, tearing itself free of the ground. Running out of options, Beatrice allowed Angelo and Cristoforo to disguise her and lead her out of the fortress. She would not return to Monfalcone with them. Upset, confused and disgusted with events on all sides, she foreswore any further involvement in the current events to focus on her sorcery for the time being. She would go to northern Castille, possibly Altamira. Her father could work out his grudge against the Donati without her. She would not promise to see Angelo again, but neither promised that she would not.

Angelo and Cristoforo returned to Monfalcone. Angelo chewed on something Beatrice had said - that Antonio had sent Mateo, which he'd denied to Angelo's face. Cristoforo, for his part, wanted to know what was this about Antonio sinking Caligari Island?!

Continue to the epilogues.
