The Animals, The Best of the Animals
I purchased this CD for $5.00, but I would have been willing to pay three times that. The song "The House of the Rising Sun" is an instantly recognizable classic. I would definately suggest this CD to anyone. It is not too heavy, nor is it as mellow as the new crap bands like Goo Goo Dolls and Machbox 20. I'd rank it at just under a 4. Maybe a 3.9

Aerosmith, Nine Lives This was given to me for my birthday. I am not a big Aerosmith fan, so I have only listened to it like twice. This doesn't have any of their great hits or any real recognizable songs. The song "Pink" is OK, but the rest of the songs are mediocere. I give it a rating of 2.

Black Sabbath, Paranoid "Paranoid" is the best Sabbath album ever made. With such great hits as "Iron Man", "Planet Caravan", "War Pigs"',and of course "Paranoid", this album is one of the best ever. Black Sabath was the first heavy metal band, and they certainly knew what they were doing. Althogh the last couple of tracks are not spectacular, the other songs more than make up for their lackluster quality. I rate Paranoid at 4.5.

Black Sabbath, Master of Reality Master of Reality is another great Sabbath album. It has many great songs, including "Children of the Grave", and "Sweetleaf", a stoner classic. The song "Into the Void" has one of the heaviest guitar riffs ever written. Pantera has covered a couple of the songs on this record, proving how heavy it really is. Despite its great songs, however, it does not have the monster grooves that Paranoid has. It is still a great album and I rate it at a 4.

Black Sabbath, Reunion This is the most lackluster of all my Sabbath albums. It is a live recording of there second show in Europe just after their reunion (hence the name.) Ozzy's voice has lost much of its high pitch, but he still delivers. Tony Iommi still has his skill with guitar, and the rhythym section is very tight. Reunion is still an excellant CD, but most of the songs sound better on the original recordings. It is a double disk set, so it does contain many songs that are not on my other Sabbath albums. If I owned more of their original albums, I would not have purchased this. It does contain a few new tracks, but they are not that great. I rate Reunion at 3. Don't buy it unless you do not have any other Sabbath albums, and even then make sure you have "Paranoid" first.

Buckcherry, Buckcherry I can't give a fiir review of this CD, because I have not heard it in it's entirety. The first song, "Lit Up", is so good that I seem to put my CD player on repeat. I heve heard two of the other tracks, but I don't remember which ones. The Singer has a terrible voice that is somehow appealing, similar to Iggy Pop. Right now I rate the CD at a 3, but that may change as soon as I listen to the whole thing.

Buckethead, Monsters and Robots While I was at Ozzfest watching Primus, this tall guy with a plastic mask and a KFC bucket on his head came out and started playing some of the fastest guitar lines I had ever heard. I checked into him when I got home from the concert and decided to buy his CD. The album is great if you like guitar driven music, but it is too far from the norm to ever be a hit. It does have a few great sonngs on it though, especially if you are a techno fan. It also has several guest appearances from Les Claypool. His music is really hard to catagorize, so I won't even try, but I do recomend you check him out because people that do like him REALLY like him. I rate the CD at a 3, it would be higher but I really have to be in the right mood to listen to it.

Bush, Sixteen Stone Nearly all of Bush's hype came from this CD and the songs "Everything's Zen", "Come Down", "Machine Head", and "Glycerine". All of these are on this album, and each one of these is very good, but every other song on this album sucks. They chose wisely when deciding which songs to release as singles because every song that did not recieve airplay is horrible. But, because of the quality of the good songs, I rate it at a 3.5

Bush, Razorblade Suitcase This album totally blows. There are no songs that I enjoy listening to. I have only heard the whole album once, and I refuse to submit my ears to that kind of torture again. I rate it at a 1.

Candlebox, Candlebox This is, I believe,is Candlebox's first major label release. The songs "Far Behind" and "You" are what originally compelled me to by this CD. It is filled with a softer form of rock than I normally listen to, but I definately would not call it mellow. The guitar has enough distortion to easily clasify the album as hard rock, although not metal. The singer has a great voice and the solo's are both emotional and inspirational. I rate this CD at a solid 4.

Danzig, Danzig This album has the instantly recognizable song "Mother" in it. I had that damn song stuck in my head for about two weeks and finally had to break down and buy it. The rest of the album is decent, but nothing too spectacular or original. It does have two other songs that I would call good, but nowhere near the hglory of "Mother". I only really listen to this CD for that one song, but I do like Danzig's mix of punk and metal. I rate this album at a 3.

Drain STH, Freaks of Nature I can't believe this is an all chick band. They are one of the heaviest bands around today, plus they have great lyrics and melodies to compliment the crushing rhythms. Imagine Korn on estrogen and testosterone at the same time and you may have some idea of what these girls sound like. If you like Korn, Deftones, Sevendust, or Limp Bizkit, check them out. The music is similar to these other bands, but I think much better. I rate this CD at a 4.5, but may increase it later if I become less leinant about giving out 5's

The Deftones, Around the Fur The Deftones are one of the leaders of a new type of metal that apeared in the late nineties, along with Korn and Sevendust. They aren't nearly as popular as Korn, but I like them better. The singer often changes from a mellow crooning to a viscersal scream. The guitar often has eerie rhythms and melodies that provide an interesting counterpoint to the vocals. Although I do not enjoy this new type of metal as much as I enjoy thrash, it does fulfill a music urge that I get every once in a while. I rate this CD at a 3.

Dream Theater, Images and Words Dream Theater is the leader in progresive rock in the nineties. I bought this album after hearing several reports of the guitarist, John Petrucci. This album has a sound that is almost too perfect. I don't especially enjoy the singer; I find the tone of his voice rather annoying. The guitar parts are, however, superb, and John Petrucci deserves all of the praise he has recieved. But, the album seems to be overproduced and not organic enough. Maybe it is just becase I not a fan of prog rock, but I do not perticulurly like this album. But, every once in a while, I have the urge to hear John's flawless guitarwork. I rate this CD at a 2.

Eiffel 65, Europop I have slowly started liking techno in the past year. The song Blue is one of those songs that you hear and have stuck in your head for the rest of the day. After this happened to me about 10 times due to all the play my local radio station gives it, I went out and bought it. Blue is definately the best song, but there are several other tracks that are just as catchy. If you like dance music, this is a great album to have, otherwise you won't like most of the music on it. I rate it at 3.5

Everlast, Whitey Ford Sings the Blues While I am not a big rap fan, I really like Everlast. It is hard to believe that this is the same person that was the frontman for House of Pain. This CD has many songs that are pure rap, but I am slowly coming around to more types of music. However, it also has the songs "Ends", and "What it's Like", a great song. Their is an acoustic guitar played along with drum sapmles and they surprisingly enough compliment each other. It needs more of his acoustic guitar on the rest of the album because the rest of the rap songs are mediocre at best, but it does have a few gems in it; I rate it at a 3.

Filter, Short Bus Filter is one of my favorite bands. They have had members that have gone on to play with Nine Inch Nails and Stabbing Westward. The album was released quite a few years ago (In '92, I think) and, from what I hear, they are afraid to release a follow up album because of the success of this one. Still, I really like this record. I rate it at 4.5

Filter, Title of the Record It seems to me that Filter has lost some of their edge, I think it is because they are trying too hard to sound like every other metal band out right now. The first album was great, but this one is pale in comparison. If they would start trying to sound more like themselsves and less like the current popular bands, Filter would be much better. I think I am being harsh on them and comparing them too much to thier first album. If this was the first album they released, I would like it much better. I have to give it a 3, because there are very few songs that really stand out, although Welcome to the Fold is great. I feel bad for these guys for haveing to follow up such a great first album. Green Jelly, Cereal Killer Soundtrack I bought this for the song "Three Little Pigs" The rest of the CD sucks, but the video for Three Pigs is one of the best ever. I rate it at a 2.

Godsmack, Godsmack Godsmack rules. I recently saw them live, and they put on a better show than Black Sabbath. The sinlgle "Whatever" is great, it sounds a lot like something Korn would do, and the rest of the album is just as good. I don't think there is one mediore song on the entire album. I really like this CD. The singer sounds a lot like James Hetfield on Load, except the music is still very heavy. I rate this one at a 5.

Guns 'n' Roses, Appetite for Destruction Guns 'n' Roses is one of the best bands to come out of the Eighties, and this is the best album GnR have made. There are many great songs on this album, including "Paradise City", "Welcome to the Jungle",and "Sweet Child O Mine." Slash is such a great guitarist and I Axl's voice is very distinct. I rate the CD at a 5.

Jimi's Chicken Shack, Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope Jimi's Chicken Shack is a relitively unknown band that I really like. Apparantly they have a video on MTV, but I have yet to see it. There music is really hard to describe because there is very little consistancy between the sound of the songs. The describe their sound as "mutt rock" because it is a bastardization of several styles. I think that it is a good description, although a bit derogatory. Anyway, I rate it at a 4.

JImi Hendrix, The Ulitimate Experiance Every one knows who Jimi is, and if you dont, you have probably never heard of a guitar either. Anyway, this is essentially his Best Hits album, and it has all of his great songs on it (except Machine Gun). Everything from "All Along the Watchtower" to the national anthem from his Woodstock performance is on this CD. It only has one song that sucks (Crosstown Traffic), but even it isn't too bad. If your like me, you can just skip it and go on to the next one. If you don't own any Jimi records, you should definately get this one. I rate it at 4.5.

The Hunger, Cinematic Superthug When I hear a song on the radio that I really like, I normally go out and buy the album without hearing the rest of the songs. Even if I have never heard of the band before, I normally end up really liking the rest of the songs and become a fan of the group. Unfortunately, some times the rest of the album sucks, and that is the case here. I heard the song "Free", bought the album and was let down: It totally sucked monkey nuts. But because it does have the one good song on it, I will rate it at a 1.

Insane Clown Posse, The Great Melanko It was my strange phobia of clowns that led me to buy this CD, and it only justified my fears. Clowns are EVIL and this album proves it. ICP tell the story of a deranged circus clown named Malenko who escaped his tent, and rap about all of Malenko's and his friends hobbies, including the joys of terrorizing little kids, road rage, suburban gangs, and other mischievious and delenquent acts. Still I enjoy this album (which has a huge underground following) and rate it at a 3.5.
