"..."...I examined the walls, the arch, and every part of the Vault, and found every part old and similar; and a mason in my presence struck every part of the bottom with his hammer, and all was solid. I confess myself at a loss to account for the movements of these leaden coffins..."

The Restless Coffins of Barbados
Anyone who has done any sort of reading about the paranormal has undoubtedly come across the story of the Chase Vault. It is mentioned in practically every ghost story book in print, right there with the Borley Rectory and the Brown Lady. There are very few other incidents in the realm of the paranormal that were focused on such a small place over such an extended period of time with such grotesque regularity.
Why does this story, set in a graveyard on a tiny island almost 200 years ago, hold such a morbid fascination for us today? Maybe we want to believe that there is a force that can follow us beyond the grave, an extension of something that was left unfinished in life -- or a wrong perpetrated after death.
The coffins that kept moving. The restless dead. The unquiet tomb.
