Jack is leaving Joey's house, the two standing awkwardly on the porch. "Thank you," Joey says, "For posing for me."
Dawson and Jen are in the same awkward position, on Jen's porch. "That was an unexpected encounter," Jen says. "I don't know what came over me," Dawson begins, but Jen cuts him off, not wanting to dissect the moment right away.
Outside of Andie's house, Andie and Pacey kiss in front of Pacey's car.
"You don't have any regrets," Jack asks Joey, "Do you?" She shakes her head. "That's good," Jack replies, and they kiss. Jack leaves, and Joey watches him go.
"See you tomorrow," Dawson says. Jen says goodnight and Dawson kisses her on the forehead before leaving.
Pacey thanks Andie for a wonderful evening, and Andie thanks him back. They go back and forth for a few moments, and then Andie walks off to her front door.
In school the next day, Dawson is finishing up his report on mysteries with a film clip. He tells the class that the rules of mystery in film often parallel those of life, and manages to frighten the class a little with his conclusion. The teacher thanks him and asks Abby to go next. She tells an elaborate story about the family dog dying from too many laxatives, and the teacher thanks her for her brilliant lie. He also tells her that she will fail the class if she still has no project tomorrow. The bell rings and the class leaves. Chris notices a note on the floor and picks it up. He begins reading and is obviously shocked by what it says.
Jack and Joey are sitting together at lunch, and not finding anything to say to one another. "So," Jack says, "Are we ever going to speak again?" "I hope so," Joey replies. "Why's it so awkward?" Jack asks her. Joey thinks for a moment before responding, "Um… I can answer that for two hundred Bob," she says, and the two share a laugh.
Andie approaches Pacey from behind and gives him a hello kiss, which he returns. "We probably shouldn't do this here," Pacey says, looking around the classroom. "I'm sorry," Andie replies quietly, "I just have a major lust issue where you're concerned." Andie tells him that she thoroughly enjoyed herself last night, and Pacey tells her he enjoyed himself too.
"Hi," Dawson says, being overly cheerful as he sits down beside Jen, "How are you?" Jen tells him she's fine and he echoes the feeling, then hands her the new rewrite of her script, in which the Dawson-type character ends up having sex with the mysterious girl from the big city instead of the Joey-type character. He tells her it was a result of their last conversation. "Our last conversation?" Jen asks, "Or our last physical encounter?" "Let's just say you… inspired me," Dawson answers.
Abby and Chris are in line and Abby is complaining about class. They sit down and Chris asks her if she had sex last night. She wants to know why he asks and he shows her the note he found in class. Abby reads aloud. "I want to talk to you about last night," she begins, "It always comes out wrong so I thought I'd write it down. The whole night was amazing, but sex changes everything." She's very excited, and decides to solve the mystery of who wrote the letter, who had sex with who.
Jack asks Joey how the drawing turned out and she pulls out her sketchbook to show him but he stops her, not wanting the picture seen by everyone in the cafeteria. "Don't worry," Joey assures him, "This is strictly for my professor's eyes only." She shows him and he asks her if he can have it when she's finished, so he can remember everything about last night. Andie asks Pacey to see his History quiz but he refuses, telling her it's none of her business. "Is it a bad grade?" she asks, "Or is it me? You're not upset about last night are you?" Pacey tells her it's not her, last night was fine. He wants to be left alone, he needs to study. "I don't want you to be the kind of guy who shuts down the minute a relationship starts to progress," Andie says. "I'm not shutting down," Pacey replies, "I just need to study."
Dawson asks Jen if she is okay with what happened last night and she tells him she is, she was more worried about how he would feel about it. "Last night was last night," he replies, "Today we have a movie to make."
Abby tells Chris about her plan to discover who wrote the letter and who had sex. "Common sense eliminates ninety percent of the class," she says, "Really if you think about it, there's only three likely couples. The most obvious being Pacey and Andie. Pacey's sexually experienced as we all know, and Andie's fallen head over heels in love with him. Then there's Joey and Jack. They share that whole artistic vibe. You know, progressive, uninhibited, experimental. Then there's Dawson and Jen. He's on the rebound, and god knows she likes to bounce." She tells him she'll need his help, she'll need him to document the whole thing on video. "Why?" he asks, "From the goodness of my heart?" "I'll let you touch me in bad places," Abby says with a smile. "Okay," he responds quickly.
Joey stands in front of the school, sheltered from the rain, and Dawson walks up beside her. Dawson asks about her drawing and tells her he'd like to see it, but Joey quickly changes the subject and asks how his movie's coming. He tells her they still can't find the perfect leading lady. "What I need," he says, "Is you." Joey asks him if this movie is about he two of them. "It's a drama in the vein of us," he replies. "I should read it don't you think?" Joey says, laughing, "Make sure it's not a character assassination." Dawson assures her he would never write anything hurtful about her, and walks off into the rain.
Abby and Chris are in the hallway and Abby mentions Dawson's new rewrite, citing this as a clue as to who had sex. She tells him she plans to "shake the tree a little bit, see what falls out." Jen approaches them to ask about rehearsal schedules for the movie, and Abby pushes her about her night with Dawson. "What happens in my bedroom," Jen assures her, "Is my business." Chris congratulates Abby for digging up some information but Abby still isn't convinced. She needs to find out who's handwriting is on the letter.
Abby approaches Pacey at his locker and asks him to sign a petition for condom dispensers in the school bathrooms. She starts asking about him and Andie, and Pacey signs the petition to get her away from him.
Abby pesters Jack next, trying to get him to sign outside the school. Jack wants nothing to do with her. Abby asks him outright if he had sex with Joey. "You've got to be kidding me," he replies. He tells her he didn't and asks her to leave him alone.
In the hallway, Chris asks Dawson if he can ask a few questions about the script, about his life, so he can get into the part. Chris asks him about sex, he can't remember what his first time was like, it was so long ago, and wants to hear it from a newcomer. "You think I had sex with Jen?" Dawson asks. "I'm just going by what I hear," Chris answers. "Who's the source this time?" Dawson asks him. "Well," Chris says, "If you and Jen were the only two in her room, who do you think it is?"
Abby gives the petition to Andie next, and then tells her she knows all about last night. "Pacey brags to Dawson, Dawson tells Jen, Jen tells me, I tell the world," Abby says. Andie is obviously not happy. "I don't want to be the one to tell you your boyfriend thinks you're lacking," Abby continues, "I mean, it's not your fault all his experience is with a forty year old teacher." Andie walks off, upset.
Chris hands Joey a copy of Dawson's script to read, and she leaves the room, leaving her sketch pad behind. Chris picks it up and opens it. Abby enters the room and he shows her the drawing. "And the plot thickens," Abby exclaims.
Dawson is working further on his script in his room when Abby enters and sits on the bed despite his obvious irritation at her being anywhere near him. "I'm not in the mood," he tells her. "that's not what I hear," she answers. Dawson tells that, despite all rumors, Jen and he did not have sex. Abby tells him that's too bad, because that was probably all that was making Joey feel better after she slept with Jack. "I don't know where this conversation is going," Dawson says, "But I'm ending it." Abby hands him the drawing of Jack that Joey made. "Jack McPhee drawn naked, Dawson drawn out of the picture," she says, "After all these years you weren't her first. And you're certainly not going to be her last."
The next day, Chris asks Abby if she knows "whodunit" yet, and she assures him that answers will be had soon enough. "If I make them think I know the answers," she says, "Then the answers will be forthcoming." She hands him a small stack of envelopes and tells him to get them into the right hands, discreetly.
Pacey tells Andie that he needs to talk to her and she tries to get away, claiming she's busy. "Apparently you've been doing enough talking for both of us," she says "It's interesting that I get the cold, shutdown, non-verbal Pacey, but the rest of Capeside gets a taste of the return of Pacey Whitter, underachieving town lothario." Pacey tells her to calm down about yesterday's weirdness, he wants to clear things up. He tells her he hasn't said a word about them to anyone, but she claims that Abby knows what happened the other night. "What's to know?" Pacey asks, "you and I shared a wonderful, romantic evening." "If you weren't happy with me," she snaps back, "Or with what happened the other night, then you should make it clear instead of spreading this sexual propaganda all over school." She tells him that she doesn't want to talk to him right now, and he leaves. Andie returns to her desk to find a letter with her name on it.
Jen bumps into Joey at the school book fair and the two are obviously uncomfortable. Jen asks what Joey thought of Dawson's script. "I thought it was a one sided view of a story that would be better left untold," Joey says. "I take it that you don't like the way you're depicted," Jen observes. "That," Joey replies, "And I'm just wondering what other elements of the script are autobiographical." Jen tells her she should talk to the writer about that.
Jack finds a note at his locker with his name on it, and Dawson asks him if he knows where Joey is. Since Jack will see Joey before he does, Dawson asks him to give something to her, and hands him the drawing. "Tell her I was overwhelmed by her talent," Dawson says. "So was I," Jack answers.
That night, Dawson, Joey, Pacey, Andie, Jack, and Jen meet in one of the school's classrooms, where their letters all told them to come. They wonder aloud who arranged the whole thing and their fears are answered as Abby and Chris enter, Chris holding a camcorder. "Oh look," she says, "All of my favorite people gathered in one room." Abby takes her place at the podium and tells them about the letter and about her mystery project. She reads a piece of the note aloud, making everyone in the room uncomfortable.
Abby goes over all of her suspicions as to who had sex with who. "You're sick," Jack says when she accuses him and Joey, "And so wrong." "Was she?" Dawson asks, "We've all seen the picture. Joey jumps in, saying that Dawson has it wrong, the picture was for art class and nothing more. Dawson asks her what happened after the modeling session. "What do you care?" Joey asks. "Maybe I don't," Dawson replies. "Oh that's right," Joey says, "You're too busy rewriting your script to imitate life. I know all about you and Jen." Dawson tells her she has it all wrong. "Oh," Abby interjects, "So you didn't have sex with Jen?" Dawson looks back at Jen, then to an expectant Joey. "Tell the truth," Joey says. "The truth is," Dawson shoots back, "You slept with Jack." "Maybe I did," Joey replies. "Maybe I slept with Jen," Dawson responds. They begin shouting at each other to answer the question until finally they both shout out "Yes!" together, and then stare for a moment, each trying to grasp what they heard. Jen speaks up, revealing that Dawson was lying, they didn't have sex. It just wasn't right, and she points out that the pathetic display she just witnessed makes it obvious why. Jack stands next, and reveals the same thing, he and Joey didn't have sex either. "Well," Abby says, "That leaves only one couple left." She's checked the handwriting: it's Pacey's. "You wrote that?" Andie asks, upset. "That's why you've been so cold. You sleep with me and then you don't want me?" Pacey shakes his head. "You disgust me," Andie concludes, and runs out. "That's not how it is," Pacey assures Jack, who exits after his sister. Jen stops in front of a smiling Abby. "I don't know where you come from," Jen says, "Or just who has the misfortune of being responsible for your existence, but you are a lying, manipulative, and cruel person. And the fact that you are only sixteen years old makes me even more sorry for you than any of the people in this room whose lives you're so intent on destroying. You're pathetic." She storms out.
Joey finishes her presentation on Agatha Christie in class the next morning, and the teacher calls on Abby next. "Is it possible, Miss Morgan, that you're going to surprise me with your assignment?" he asks her, "Is it possible that you've finally decided to do something good for yourself and apply a little integrity to your education?" Abby removes a large binder and a videotape from under her desk and puts them down on top. She looks around, at Dawson and Joey, at an obviously upset Andie, at Jen, and puts the stuff away. "I wouldn't want to disappoint you, Mr. Peterson," she says, "I didn't do it. And integrity, just for the record, is a tired notion last seen in the late seventies." The teacher gives her the failing grade he promised and calls on Andie next. As she rises to go to the front, Andie leans down to Abby. "Thank you," she says. "Whatever," Abby replies.
Jack is sitting in a dark classroom after school and Jen enters, telling him to go home. She sits down with him and they talk about how it's not much fun playing second string in a relationship. Jack asks her what she's going to do about Dawson and she tells him that as much as she loves him she's just not there yet. "I can take all the jerks in the world climbing in and out of my bedroom window," she says, "But when Dawson Leery does it it better be for me." Jack wonders at how she can unleash all that on someone she barely knows, and Jen asks him why he and Joey didn't do it. He eventually agrees, and whispers it in her ear. "You couldn't get it up?" Jen whispers, astonished. Jack tells her to keep her voice down. "I really wanted to, really badly, and it just wouldn't cooperate. I couldn't even take my clothes off I was so scared." "It's okay," Jen tells him, "Those things just never cooperate." They laugh.
It's raining outside, and Pacey runs through the rain and into Andie's car. She immediately tells him to get out, but he's determined to tell her what's been going on. He reaches into his bag and hands her his History quiz. It's an A. His first A. "It kinda through me for a loop," he says, "It changes everything. Don't you see, everything has always been so predictable for me but now my whole life course is changing and every since you and I had sex I've felt anxious. Wondering should we have waited, should we slow down, questioning whether or not it was the right thing to do and wishing I had taken the high road, and that's not me. The only comforting part about being Pacey Whitter was that I always knew what to expect, and now I don't have a clue, and I'm terrified. That's why I was pulling away from you." Andie tells him it's okay to be scared, but she doesn't want him to be scared of her. "How can I not be Andie?" he asks, "You're the one that's opening up this whole life for me. I'm just afraid that… that… I'm afraid because you're the single most important being to ever grace my existence. Andie, I am falling hopelessly in love with you. Now say something, because I did just kinda cut it open and lay it out for you." Andie is quiet for a moment. "Yeah, she replies, "That was pretty scary. I'll say that I share your fear. Your exact fear." Pacey smiles and leans in to kiss her.
Dawson and Joey are at their lockers and exchanging awkward glances until Dawson breaks the silence. "You and I cry sex until we're blue in the face," he blurts out, "And then when it comes down to actually doing it all we're left with are a couple of harmless kisses. I mean, the setting was right, the timing was perfect, but nothing happened. Why?" "I know why," Joey answers, "Same reason nothing happened with me. It's not about the perfect setting, and it's not about the perfect timing. It's about the perfect person." She walks away and he follows her outside into the rain. Beneath the school entrance, they talk. "Joey I miss you," Dawson says, "I don't know if me can recapture fifteen years of what we had but I would certainly be willing to accept any small fraction you'd want to send my way." "Well maybe we can start slowly," Joey replies. Dawson agrees and stares up at the sky. "It doesn't look like this rain is going to let up anytime soon," he says, "So what do you say we make a run for it?" "I say we walk," Joey says, taking Dawson's hand. They walk out and Dawson pulls her close, bringing his jacket up over their heads. "What'd you really think of my script?" Dawson asks her, "The whole, honest, bitter, cynical truth?" Joey asks in response, "I had no idea I was so mysterious." "You are definitely a mystery," Dawson says. "I like the way you see me," Joey says, and they walk off into the pouring rain.
