I served in the United States Air Force from 1981 to 1987. Below you will find some brief memories from my days in service.
This is my picture taken during basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas.
This odd looking contraption was a vital link for NATO in air defense in Europe. Its nicknamed the rubber duck and it was designed to be mobile. Here at Site 1, Mehlingen, West Germany it was a more permanent use to support NATO while an underground bunker was being built. It breaks down in to single vans for easy mobility. Each van carries 4 RADAR Scopes or a Hughes Air Defense Mainframe Computer. Its hard to see details, the comouflage worked really well.
This is called a TPS43E RADAR and it was our source for RADAR data in the duck, it was remotely stationed away from site 1 at Ficshbach. Ken Lytz from Akron, Ohio is in the picture. Where is Ken now?
This is a picture of Vince Simon cooking chili. Behind him is Bob Garcia. I was fortunate to meet some very special people in the Air Force. This camping trip is to Bad Krueznach, Germany.
This is a picture of me with Michael Treaster (standing), Victor Ast, Vince Simon and Ken Youden (left to right). As you can see we very seldom took anything serious. The picture was taken by Donna Wright whose room we were in celebrating my birthday. All but Mike was Aerospace Controllers at Sembach AB, West Germany.
