The Last Battle

The reader begins The Last Battle in Narnia, at the Great Waterfall.  An ape named Shift and a donkey named Puzzle find a lion's skin in the pool.  Shift wants Puzzle to swim out and get it so he can make a "fine winter coat" for Puzzle, but Puzzle, knowing that all lions are noble because of "you know Who," would rather bury it.  But, since the donkey is meek and quite the doormat, Shift convinces him to go into the freezing water and fetch the skin.  Puzzle does as he is asked, returns with the skin exhausted, and asks if he may rest.  But Shift tells him to trot down to Chippingford and see if there are any oranges or bananas.
