Tree of Life

Life is like a tree.
We all start as seeds,
hidden in the dark and safe embrace
of our mother, who feeds and supports us
until we have grown enough
to touch the light.
And see.

We'll experience the big, outside world
full of new things and creatures.
Whatever happens
our roots will always be
with our mother.
Our Earth.

The sun of love will shine on us,
will give us new strength
so we will grow taller
and grow branches.
On each branch twigs will appear
and on each twig many leaves:
our thoughts and feelings coming out.
Carefully, but more surely when received with warmth.

A happy tree may even blossom
and bear fruit,
sharing the light and love.
Joyful birds may come
and sit on our branches for a while,
singing stories of places far away.
Enchanting us with their beauty.

Jealous birds may come
and pick our fruit and branches,
destroying what we've worked so hard for
in the blow of a day.
Or sometimes the worms of doubt
and insecurity will eat our roots,
leaving us vulnerable to outside influences.

Autumn-storms may tear our branches,
rain may scatter our dried-out leaves:
old thoughts blown away.
Winter will come, when we are cold and lonely
and keep to ourselves.
Allone.

But after each winter
there will be spring,
the miracle time of life reborn,
when we will grow again
and new, tender green leaves
will spring up
out of old wounds.

For that's the world we live in,
Life is like a Tree.
