Captain Nemo
- Farley
- First of all, Nemo isn't your real name, is it? Who are you?
- Captain Nemo
- You'll never know.
- Farley
- Why not?
- Captain Nemo
- Continue, Mr. Farley. Who I am is of no concern of yours.
- Farley
- Why did you build the Nautilus?
- Captain Nemo
- Oppression. I became disgusted with man's inhumanity to each other. That's all they know how to do-those men of the surface. Kill. Fight. Destroy. Hate. People with families are just trying to survive, live. Families torn apart by war, by...(voice trails off)
- Farley
- It must have affected you.
- Captain Nemo
- I tried to avoid their senseless war. I refused my country's letters and requests to get involved. So they tortured me and when that didn't work...my wife...they...
- Farley
- That's okay. I understand.
- Captain Nemo
- You couldn't possibly. My wife was beaten, raped, and killed while I was forced to watch! She did not deserve that. She did nothing. It was me they wanted.
- Farley
- What did they want from you?
- Captain Nemo
- The knowledge I possessed. My research. They wanted to use it to further their war efforts. With that information they could control other nations.
- Farley
- And did they get it?
- Captain Nemo
- No. When they realized they weren't going to, they sent me to a labor camp. There I met my companions.
- Farley
- The crew of the Nautilus?
- Captain Nemo
- Yes. They had suffered like I had. We were brothers, bound by our tragedies. We escaped and fled to a deserted island where we build the Nautilus.
- Farley
- Why not just live on the island?
- Captain Nemo
- I wanted to go where they would never reach me. I love the sea. I will live nowhere else. There I am independant. There I am finally free!
