Over Population When people talk about enviornmental concerns, you hear about the hole in the ozone layer, emisions from burning fossil fuels, clean water ways, and endangered animals. What is ussually ignored is the root of all the problems. That is people. It isn't individual people, although there are certainly some in congress that aren't helping, it is the amount of people. Currently there are almost 6 Billion people on our planet. In the year 1800 the world population was only about 1 Billion. Consider that for a moment. It took the human race a few million years to reach the level of 1 Billion, but in less than 200 years that number has gone up by a factor of 6. And this is a time in which the world has seen some of the deadliest wars the planet has known. What has lead to this great explosion of human beings on the face of the globe? First, medical science has greatly extended the average life span. Smallpox, Polio, and other diseases no longer kill in the numbers they once did. A bad heart can be replaced with a stronger one or even with an artifical device. Why are people a problem? To put it simply the Earth can only sustain a limited number of human beings before those same human beings change the Earth so it is no longer fit to live on. We are already seeing these affects. Much of the water that was once good to drink, is no longer safe.without expensive filtration and cleaning systems. Also many fishing areas that once provided a bountiful harvest of food are so contaminated anything living there would be poisonous. There are growing holes in the ozone layer that protects us from being fried by the sun. The air in many places around the world is so polluted birds have been known to drop dead out of the sky. (This can't be any good for the people either.) Oxygen producing rain forests are being cleared at an alarming rate. Our society is also feeling the stresses of such a large and crowded society. Scientists have done studies showing how small mamals such as rats become more violent in crowded conditions. When looking at the problems of many of our large cities it is not difficult to see a correlation. In the past people need ed to have a large number of children to ensure that atleast some would survive to carry on the genetic material. Through the medicla advances mentioned earlier in this article we no longer need to do this. In our current society most of the children will grow to adulthood. There are steps each of us can take
to help to stem this mounting problem. First each woman should pledge to
give birth to no more than once child. Second, any person who wants to
be a parent should consider adoption. There are many children in every
country on Earth looking for someone to love them. By adopting a child
you will enrich thier life and wont be adding to the cumulative effects
of over populating the planet.
