Recommended Books The Contented Little Baby Book – Gina Ford
This is an absolute must have if you are having a baby. Gina Ford guides you though routines for the first year for your baby. With help from this book your baby will learn how to sleep from 7pm to 7am, and it will also guide you though the weaning process.
I didn’t use this book right from the start when I had my baby, but if I ever have another I would use this right from day one. No one tells you what you need to know when you are pregnant. Oh yeah, you’ve got the anti-natal classes that tell you about the birth and what to expect, but to be honest that’s just one short day in your life, it’s the bit after you really need to know about.
After I gave birth to Rohan we were just left with him. I didn’t have a single idea about what to do with him. No one at the hospital told me how often I should be feeding him and how regular you have to change his nappy. As a result we had difficulties in the early days in feeding him as I wasn’t feeding him regularly. He grew weak and wouldn’t feed at all for twelve hours. I was emitted back into hospital over night for his feeding to be monitored. It wasn’t until then under the guidance of the hospital that I learnt how regularly to feed my baby. If only they could have taught me this as soon as I had him.
The book not only gives advice on feeding but also your baby’s sleeping pattern. I realise now that it is so important for your baby to have a good routine and the right amount asleep. At the start Rohan was sleeping much more than Gina recommends. After getting stressed about not being able to keep him awake during the day, I realised that all that matters is that he goes down well at 7pm, the rest will eventually fall into place later. Some baby’s just need more sleep, and Rohan loved his sleep.
The important thing is to remember to be flexible. As long as your baby gets the perfect balance of sleep and wake time for them, gets fed regularly and most importantly learns to go to sleep by themselves, then you are well on the way to a contented baby. Remember, don’t stress if it does go wrong, just start again 7am the following morning. There is always another day to try again. 99% of the problems can be solved by double checking the routine to make sure that you haven’t accidentally wondered off in the wrong direction somewhere. Babies can be so sensitive to change in their routines.
Entertaining and Educating your Preschool Child – Gee & Meredith (An Usborne Guide) ISBN: 0746001339
This book is great for ideas for entertaining your infant. I never realised how difficult it was to keep a baby amused. This guides you though what your child should be learning and playing with up to the age of five. There are loads of ideas on how to make things for your child to play with. It makes you realise that you don’t have to buy big expensive toys to keep your little one happy. They will love their toys much more if they get to help you make something and then get to play with it. It helps them be creative, imaginative and appreciative of the effort that goes into making something. A great book and it’s certainly let my imagination free too!
Nappies Bambino Mio Reusable Nappies I have never been happy with the idea of throwing all those disposable nappies away, what a waste. They say that it takes 300 years for them to decompose. That’s a hell of a lot of smelly nappies wasting away in landfill sites. Then there is the cost. About £7 a week, in a year…. £364, and that’s just the first year.
Ok so you have to handle soiled nappies, and there is plenty of washing, but the saving is so great, and if you have another child it’s even greater. You do have to weigh up the fact that you are using the washing machine more, and then there is the time too. But these nappies are great.
It takes about a week to get used to them. They do leak to start with, but once you get used to folding them correctly and they have been washed enough times they become more absorbent.
They work like this. There is a cover; you get three of these in the Birth to Potty pack. You should only have change these once a day, this is not always the case if you’ve had a couple of badly soiled nappies. Then there is the nappies themselves. These are changed at every change and you wash them all every three days. You get twenty-four of these in the starter pack. You then place the disposable liner over the nappy to lock away most of the wetness. These you just throw away. I haven’t ever had to soak the soiled nappies. I just rinse the worst away in preparation for washing.
You have to think really hard if you want to spend the time washing these and folding them every change. If you are thinking of returning to work after having a baby it could be too much work. Over time you do get used to the extra work and it just becomes part of your daily routine.
Trail packs can be brought from the Bambino Mio website. If you do decide to choose these nappies the Birth to Potty pack is great value for money and you get even more for your money if you buy them from Kiddicare.com.
