I would also like to take your time and energy to voice something that I
have found after reading some other reviews and summaries of the play. It
seems that many view this play as Shakespeare’s worst and it has even drawn
the comment that it is a “play loved by ignorant audiences ” I would like
to respond to that by making an analogy that Shakespeare’s Othello to Titus
is just like comparing The excellent movie, American Beauty to The Rock’s
The Rundown. The two movies are to vastly different types of movie. Yet
the Two movies can both be called good movies in their own aspect. Beauty
has moments that touch you and make you think. Rundown has The Rock
executing Pile drivers upon Brazilian bandits. Both are equally
entertaining to watch. One’s tastes depend on what they choose, but to make
the generalization that Titus is only appreciated by ignorant audiences? I
ask you, would an ignorant audience member truly appreciate Christopher
Walken’s monologue about the tooth fairy? I think not. To say that the
ignorant audience likes Titus is making a generalization that is all too
dangerous. Titus gave Stephan King a run for his money. And, like the
tooth fairy monologue, it had some moments that were quite enjoyable to
watch. So, in short if one likes the play. That is great. If not. That is
fine too. But if one was to generalize an entire group of happy
theatergoers? That is just Bad mojo.
