Lunk
Long-standing readers will know of my tendency to elevate the importance of characters that I originally intended to be background bit-players, due to the fact that I get rather attached to them. Lunk is one such character - he started off as one of several southern gentlemen who appeared at the end of the story I drew for the Bubba fan issue, and his role didn’t extend much beyond acting as a piece of scenery. But for some reason he caught the imagination of both Scary Larry - the writer of the story, you’ll recall - and myself (it’s probably something to do with the oversized affable dimness he projects), and there’s a good chance he’ll be cropping up in a new, more substantial role in the near future.
This little pen-and-ink illo is a finished version of the original sketch featured on the Bubba mini-site, and was drawn as a surprise Christmas present for Larry by way of thanks for his being such marvellous fun to work with, and a jolly excellent bloke all round. I even thought to sign it this time, which I normally forget to do, and thus lowered its value substantially.
