E-commerce Case Two - Finding a New VCR
Comparison of buy.com and Amazon.com
Vene T. Yates
Buy.com is easier to use. The electronics menu choice has an onMouseover event that opens a pop-up menu, which you use to highlight your choice and be taken directly to a list of VCRs. Your hand never needs to leave the mouse.
Amazon.com has had this same look for a while and many of their customers are used to the layout. Therefore, it is best that they not change too dramatically so the site remains consistent for their established customer base.
Some of the products listed on Amazon.com do not offer further descriptions though there is a link to such a page. However, the customer reviews is a nice feature listed on this deeper page. Buy.com offers more information on the units on the list page than does Amazon.com and the placement of the accessories along side of the unit in the full description page is a nice feature.
Both sites listed the Go Video DVD/4-Head HiFi VCR Combo model #
DVR4000 and I used this as a comparison. The price on Amazon is $269 with a
list price showing as $349. Buy.com is selling it for $329 and displays a list
price of $559.
Bottom line is the price. While buy.com has a better appearance, navigation, and more information on the product, Amazon.com has a better price.
Amazon.com offers the option to have the list sorted by alpha, price, best selling, and customer review ratings.
Buy.com onMouseover for the menu is a helpful feature.
