General Sherra's Monument

Who's Sherra?

Sherra is the loyal general of the Mazoku lord, Dynast Grausherra. She's a fairly obscure character that appears in the Slayers novels, but not the anime. (Alternate spellings of her name are: Scherra, Sheela, Shaila, Shayla.)

In the novels, Dynast makes his presence known after the deaths of Gaav the Demon Dragon King and Hellmaster Phibrizzo. He sends Sherra to cause trouble among the humans. Sherra's role in the grand scheme of things ends when she fights Lina and Gourry in the Dils kingdom, where Dynast has been impersonating the real king. Dynast orders her to defeat them, and a battle ensues, ending with Sherra's demise. She embraces her fate, and dies with a smile on her face. Lina doesn't understand why Sherra was so willing to sacrifice herself until she realizes that it was Dynast himself she was protecting.

A Sword Is A Girl's Best Friend

Sherra possesses a magical sword called Dulgofa. (Alternate spellings are: Doolgofa, Doulgofa, Doulgofar.) It can project magical attacks and dispel attack spells, but its most important power is its ability to turn humans into monsters. She's quite skilled at using it, but not quite as good a swordsperson as Gourry. I've heard that her sword is sentient and that it's really a monster trapped in the form of a sword.

Sherra's Persona

Based on what I know about her character, she is loyal, determined, serious, and proud. She does not have a sense of humor. She seems to be something of a perfectionist, and becomes upset when humans (namely Lina Inverse and her cohorts) interfere with her plans. Like all monsters in the Slayers world, she manipulates humans to accomplish her goals. She looks down on humans, thinking of them as weak. It's possible that she thinks that she's doing them a favor by turning them into monsters. At the heart of her character is her devotion to her lord, Dynast. Sherra is devoutly loyal, and is ardently protective of him. She was willing to sacrifice herself in order to save him with no second thoughts.

Why a Sherra shrine?

I just wanted to give this under-appreciated Mazoku the recognition she deserves.

Be forever, Sherra! Here your memory lives on.
