Dreams from Earth
"I'm sane because I'm dreaming."
Found in 1986, carved in stone on a riverbed
The oldest memory I have is a sound - that of someone screaming. My mother insists it was one of the nurses who assisted in my delivery but my father had always told me that the scream came from my mother. Her shock was not because of the trauma of labor; she was quite drugged and living phantasmagoric fantasies during pushes and gasps. The reason was because of the caul that engulfed my head. It made me look faceless, mutated, and it clung like an alien. Nevertheless, the determined, grinning doctor click-clacked his gleaming silver forceps and removed the membrane to reveal my stunned face. Another minute attached to me and I would have died, or so I've been told.
Later in life I was informed that such a mucosa hood was thought of as "good luck" to its recipient. I have not seen such luck but I have come to blame the visions and thoughts stewing in my mind on that incident at my birth.
Before 1989 I never dreamt, but once I started the dreams flowed like mad and some of their contents have come true. These visions that control my life are easier to deal with by writing them down, thus releasing their gnawing presence from inside my head. Therefore I plan to write down as many as I can.
