For some reason I had gotten an apartment with Charles in downtown Tacoma. I think that perhaps Lisa and I had separated for some reason but I’m not really sure of the circumstances that led to me getting an apartment with Charles instead of me just living at home with Lisa. Anywho, the apartment Charles and I had obtained was alongside the roads in downtown Tacoma that are hills upon hills that just go up and up. Charles and I started walking up these hills because apparently our apartment was up about 10 blocks or so. We started at the bottom of the hills, around Pacific Avenue, and walked up with the road just to the left of us. We walked on an area that was where the sidewalk is normally situated, just a few feet to the right of the street which was, well duh, to the left of us. The steps went up and they were interesting steps to say the least. At each block, a new set of steps began that went up for about four stairs and then there was level ground as we traversed the length of the block to start another block introduced by another set of stairs. The stairs were cartoon-like, multicolored and kind of billowy, like sponges but still stair shaped. Each set of steps at each new block beginning was the same color scheme, but at the next block they would be a different color scheme. I particularly remember one set of steps, three or four total, that were light violet and off-gray colored. This particular set of steps was the last ones in a long line of steps leading up the hill to the door of our apartment. These last steps were actually on top of a building. I got the impression that there were some steps leading to the top of a building by the side of the street and then the last set of steps to our apartment were on top of this building. The building was a box-like, two-story pasty-looking dwelling with a flat roof that looked like it would have drainage problems. At this point I looked to the left to the street and saw a pathway worn into the foot-tall grassy wisps of foliage in front of the street-wary sidewalk. This showed me that others have walked from the sidewalk here and to the place where I now stood. There was the street, slanting down to the left at a 30-degree angle, beyond the sidewalk. It made me realize that I didn’t really need to walk all the way up from the bottom of the hill, that I could have just parked right there on the street by the front door of my apartment and walked in from there. Sometime in the beginning of this dream I was worried about how I was going to move all my belongings into the apartment if I had to carry them up the hill but then I realized right then and there that all I had to do was to drive to this 30-degree-angle hill where there was an obvious street and park my vehicle, which hosted such possessions, to that spot and then unload them to the front door of the apartment which was only 15 feet away from door to vehicle. As Charles and I stood there in front of this apartment door, a maintenance man appeared to our right. I can’t remember much about him other than he was a mid-thirties type of guy and probably wore scruffy blue jeans and a grimy-colored shirt that hung down to the elbows; he may have resembled Schneider on that sitcom One Day At A Time. He had this thing that had long, thin steel belts extruding from it, like they were attached to his key ring or something. These thin belts of steel were 1/3 of an inch wide and shot out from his waist, as if they were attached there, and they shot through the middle of the doorknob that was there on the door of our apartment. There is the street, to the left, and the apartment, drab whitish and block-like, and then there is the door to the apartment, around the corner and, when you look at it, is facing the street. Schneider-boy has these thin steel bands protruding from his waist, four or five of them, and they shot through the middle of the doorknob and into the house beyond. There was a woman standing to the left of us, near the street, and she was the landlady to this apartment. She was short and had chin-length, straight, light-orangeish hair and looked like Bonnie Franklin, an actress that was also on One Day at a Time. She indicated to the maintenance man that he had put the thin steel bands into the door the proper way, that how she wanted it done was how the guy was doing it. When the door opened up, the thin steel bands could be seen snaking into the house inside. This made it hard to enter the house because I had to duck down underneath the steel bands. Right inside the front door was a small rectangular space just wide enough for the door to swing open into. First Charles entered, bending down to pass by the steel bands, and then I did, going to the right and into the apartment. The apartment was kind of rundown but wasn’t that bad. It had a lot of space, with wide, open rooms and big windows. There were numerous rooms, at least five or six, and all large. As Charles and I walked around the apartment we noticed two other guys in there. I can’t remember much about their features. It was understood that this apartment was one that many people could rent instead of just Charles and myself, but Charles mentioned that no, it was just he and I that were renters for this particular apartment. However, these two guys we saw there weren’t leaving. I approached them as they were in a room that was probably the bathroom. They were doing laundry, folding clothes or towels or something, and I asked one of the guys: “Do you live here?” And he replied: “Yeah!” I knew right then and there that I wasn’t going to be living in this place long; I didn’t feel comfortable sharing it with two guys I didn’t even know. I mentioned to Charles that I wouldn’t be moving all my stuff in here, that I would probably just bring a sleeping bag and pillow at night to sleep with and leave all my belongings where they were, which was probably at my house with Lisa, which kind of made me wonder why I was moving into this apartment anyway. One of the guys that I didn’t know and Charles were talking about something and Charles told me that the guy had said something about Dexter. It was some kind of derogatory remark but I’m not sure what it was. Whatever the remark was that put Dexter down, it made Charles real angry and he told me that the next time he talked to that guy, that if he again cut Dexter down then he was going to scream into his face.

I was on a toboggan racing down a snow-covered hill. I see myself as the person sitting at the front of the toboggan, although it may have been someone else. The person, or me, had collar-length black or dark brown hair that whisked backward as we all raced down the hill. There were two or three others sitting behind me on the toboggan but I can’t remember who they were, although we probably were doing something in this dream prior to this moment but I’ll be damned if I can remember what that is now. The atmosphere was slightly dark, maybe at twilight, around 6 or 7 in the evening. We raced downhill on this toboggan and at the bottom of the snow-covered hill was a bay that kind of reminded me of the beachfront property my parents owned on Commencement Bay. The scene was definitely early evening and there was a hint of a shimmering moon or sun gracing the rippling waves as they silently reflected on the water there. Where the water met the beach was a post. It was a 4 x 4 jobbie and stood about 6 or so feet high. Apparently, and this is the weird part, my friends and I on the toboggan were really small, like only a foot long, and when we reached the shore of the bay our toboggan met the post head on then raced to the top where it stopped. There we were, the two or three of us, facing directly up as our toboggan clung tightly to the side of the 4 x 4 post. I remember seeing this scene from the viewpoint of watching from the shore and looking out into the bay. I can see the little toboggan with its little people positioned at the top of this post that stands in the shore right at the waterline. Apparently we raced to the top of this post because there was a big giant monster type of person that was after us. We knew that if we raced the toboggan to the top of this post then the monster would be unable to reach us. The monster/person/thing was an average-sized human, perhaps 5 feet 10 or so, that had wild scraggly hair and claws at the fingertips instead of fingers. This monster thing, realizing we in the toboggan had reached the top of this post, reached up for us in an attempt to grab us. Fortunately, we were too far up for the monster to reach us. It reached up as far as it could with its claws and scratched with its talons, which were pretty thick and strong, on the wood right below the toboggan. I was scared to death, thinking that maybe we hadn’t gotten high enough to be out of the reach of this thing below us, but the monster scratched and never was able to grab us. It tried, though, and I felt lucky to still be alive as its claws came to within inches of the back of our sled and tore little white shreds into the redwood-colored pressure-treated post. After a minute or two of this going on, the post we were situated on began to tip over and finally it slammed into the water that lapped up onto the shore. The dream ended about here but after the post fell into the water, I didn’t feel a sense of urgency or any alarm, apparently meaning that splashing into the water meant that we were safe from the beast on the shore.
