Kevin: Grab her! PJ: Adulterer! Prostitute! Brian: Seize her! Don’t let her get away! Narrator: A temple guard grabbed her by the upper arm, his nails digging into her tender flesh. Mary tried to resist, but the man’s grip held fast. The terrified woman began to tremble uncontrollably. She had been suspicious when the new customer appeared at the door of her room so early in the morning. Patrick: Get her some clothes. Kevin: Humph! I say take her as she is. It will be more convincing. PJ: no, He is in the temple and we can’t take her to the temple like that. Brian: Put this on. Hide your shame. Brian: Put this on. Hide your shame. Narrator: Grateful for even the crude covering, Mary snatched the robe from the man’s outstretched hand and wrapped it about herself. Though a prostitute, she still had a sense of modesty. Under the gaze of the lusting eyes of her accusers, she covered her body. Her fingers trembled as she tied the belt of the dirty, oversized robe about her waist. The guards dragged her through the streets. Mary: Where are they taking me? Narrator: Up ahead loomed the holy temple. Mary: the temple? Narrator: Her panic grew. Mary: Why the temple? Narrator: She could hear the shouts. Curses from spectators as they passed. Mary: O God, please don’t let Martha and Lazarus see me as I really am. How can I expect the pure Holy one of Israel hear the prayer of a filthy sinner such as I? I’ve gone too far for God ever to forgive or hear my prayer Narrator: A movement off to the side of the narrow street caused Mary’s breath to catch in her throat. Priests were pitching up some of the lay stone that were intermittently scattered in front of the buildings, used to open the shop doors. Mary: They are going to stone me. They’re going to stone me to death and then those scavenging dogs will eat me as they did Jezebel. Why are you taking me to the Temple? Why don’t they stone me outside the gate? PJ: You may still have a chance. If they stone the Teacher, they will probability let you go. He’s the one they want. Narrator: Mary stood in awe. although she heard of Him (everyone had) she had never seen Him. As they get closer to Him, she saw a gentleness, an expression of innocence mixed with wisdom and dignity. His whole frame had a perfect symmetry and balance that bore a combination of nobility and compassion. Mary had never before seen such majesty in any man, and Mary had known many men. Brian: Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses, in the saw, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do you say. Narrator: There was a long moment of silence. The teacher looked at Mary. Mortified Mary felt this was the end of he world. The teacher was writing words in the test of the temple floor. Teacher: Let he who is without sin among you cast the first stone. Narrator: Mary cringed, expecting a hale of stones to descend upon her. Instead, she heard a thud and someone walking away, followed by the sound of footsteps walking away from the scene. After what seemed like an eternity, the gentle hand of the teacher touched her shoulder. Teacher: Madam, where are you accusers? Has no one condemned you? Mary: No one Lord. Teacher: Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more. Narrator: Mary threw herself at the Master’s feet and pulled out her heartfelt appreciation mingled with tears. Before her, she felt that her entire sin was erased from the dust. At that moment, Mary felt an enormous burden of guilt lift from her soul.
